My dog has white spots in his mouth. Are they cancerous or normal?

Thank you for taking multiple pictures and circling the areas. That was very helpful. The areas that you circled are a normal part of the lips and gums called the commissures. Ace has some freckling of his mouth tissue, so he has both black and pink areas of this gums. His commissures appear a little more prominent since they are pink, but they look completely normal. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Am is very cute! It's hard to say 100% from the pictures. The 2 possibilities are viral Papilloma, which is contagious and likes to be on the face but more so the mouth. Dogs get it from playing with other dogs at the park or from Doggie Daycare. Papillomas are white to grey and look warty. They tend to resolve with time. The other possibility is a benign histiocytoma. They are growths that appear on young dogs that spontaneously go away with in a few months. They tend to be pink and hairless, like a button. I hope this helps! As long as its not raised, and its never been ulcerated/bleeding, and its not changing in size, I don't think you need to be concerned. Pigment of skin and mucous membranes (gums, tongue, etc) can change with age and it is not indicative of a problem. If it DOES seem to be changing, if it becomes ulcerated or raised, talk to your vet; if that occurs, then it needs to be biopsied. But as I said already, based on what your saying and on your photo, I'm not worried. This can be a normal change. No one knows exactly why it happens. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
