Aww poor guy. He may have a muscle sprain. You can apply a cold compress onto the areas that appear sore for 5-10 minute intervals twice a day for next few days. Also limit his activity, don't encourage active play, and leash walk him only outside. If this is just a muscle sprain then he should improve over the next 48-72 hrs. However keep in mind that he should be able to at least move the limb somewhat, there shouldn't be a significant amount of noticeable swelling, and it shouldn't appear to be dangling (possible fracture). These are all signs that you shouldn't wait and should take him in right away. I do not recommend giving him any over the counter human pain medication, because these are not safe for pets due to high risk of acute liver and kidney damage. If he is still limping after that time frame, or getting any worse, then it is best to have your vet take a look at him to make sure he doesn't have more serious internal injuries (ligament injury, hairline bone fracture, dislocation).

It sounds like Daddy injured himself jumping up on the bed. I recommend resting him for the next 48 hours. No running, jumping, or playing. Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam. The vet can diagnose where the pain is coming from, and can dictate a treatment plan for it. He may also benefit from some pain medications, which the vet can prescribe. Hello, thank you for using PetCoach. I suspect Hank may have some arthritis. It is very common for dogs of all breeds, shapes, sizes to get arthritis as they age. The only true way to definitely diagnose arthritis would be with x-rays. I suggest you take Hank to your vet for an examination - there may be obvious clues to the vet that arthritis (or something else) is present. In the meantime you can try using a joint supplement that is made for dogs (not humans). I would use one that has the following ingredients: glucosamine, chondroitin sulfate, methylsulfonylmethane (MSM). The MSM is very important as it is a natural anti-inflammatory. I'm sorry that Teddy is painful. There are many reasons he might be painful. If he is normally a very active little guy, he could have fallen or run into something to cause some kind of injury. He could have pain in his legs or his neck or back as spinal pain will also cause dogs to not want to be too active. Disk disease is a very common condition that can cause pain, although he is a little young for that. There could be an abscess or other type of infection starting to form. If he seems very painful now, I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian for an examination to determine where he is painful. They may recommend x-rays of the painful area to look for fractures or other type of injuries. You can also restrict his activity to a kennel so that he can rest. Please do not give him any over-the-counter human pain medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen or Tylenol as these can have serious side effects in animals.

At this age, she likely has some issues with her knees. In particular a condition called patellar luxation affects small breed dogs often and can cause temporary moments of discomfort. A physical exam by your vet can help diagnose the problem quickly. If she does have patellar luxation, joint supplements (i.e. Dasquin or Cosequin) and sometimes pain management through your vet can help provide some comfort for her.
