Why does my toy poodle shriek when jumping off low surfaces?

It might be that her back or neck is sore. Try to prevent her from jumping, running, or playing tug of war/roughhousing for a few days. If it’s not getting better in the next 2-3 days, take him in to the vet. If he’s getting worse, or develops other symptoms, don’t wait to take him in. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly neck or back pain. It could still be pain associated with a leg even if nothing seems wrong with them. I recommend that you have Piper evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics include radiographs. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least they can prescribe pain control medications to make Piper feel better. In the meantime, reduce her activity as much as possible as that in itself can make a big difference. Chihuahuas are prone to having luxating patellas which can cause pain when jumping. This can be a genetic problem and if it gets worse then he may need surgery to keep them in place. I recommend limiting the jumping by using pet stairs to the furniture, and keeping him on the thin side to protect his legs from carrying excess weight. As long as he’s not lame and not painful if you prevent him from jumping, then you can wait to have him examined. If he’s in constant pain or has a lameness then please take him in soon for a diagnosis and pain medication. I agree that Bow seems to be in pain. Although the injury could be anywhere in his body, the big concern with his breed is an injury to the neck or spine. With their long bodies, Dachshunds are prone to back injuries. I recommend to have him seen by his veterinarian who will palate the neck, spine and legs to determine what area is injured. They will also try to determine if it is a soft tissue injury or related to the bones. Until you see the doctor, Bow must have strict exercise restriction. Do not allow him to do any more jumping, no running, no stairs, no walks and outside on a leash only. You must be cautious with a potential back issue as it can have serious consequences. The most common causes of lameness in his back legs at his age are a ligament tear, knee cap luxation (moves out of its normal groove), followed by a foreign object stuck in his paw. It is also possible that he simply strained a hip muscle. No matter the case, he needs to be evaluated by a vet to determine exactly which. He may just need a little rest and anti-inflammatory therapy, but a sedated exam and radiographs may be needed to rule out significant disease that could need surgery to fix. Do not give anything over the counter for his discomfort as those medications can be quite harmful to Charlie. Keep him from running around and playing too hard until you can get him in to be evaluated by a veterinarian. While I'd recommend having him seen as soon as you can, his condition should be okay to wait for a day or two if you can't get into your vet right away. This can be due to conditions such as a soft tissue injury, ligament conditions, a fracture and even a tumor. For this reason, I recommend that you have Jo evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. A veterinarian should be able to perform an examination and localize where the pain is so that further diagnostics like radiographs can be performed. Treatment will be highly dependent on what is causing the lameness. At the very least your veterinarian can start Jo on pain control medications to provide comfort. The yelping is likely a sign of pain, which can localized to pretty much any of the joints, including the spine. Princess may have trauma or arthritis which are both painful. Your vet can perform and exam and x-rays to determine exactly which part of the body is affected. Supplements, pain medication (if Princess can tolerate them), and a diet may be warranted to keep Princess pain-free. I hope this helps and that all is well!
