My dog has weight changes. Are these false pregnancy symptoms?

It can be difficult to tell if young mothers are indeed pregnant as small litters can cause minimal stretch, especially up to the final week. An ultrasound exam would be recommended in order to determine if she is indeed pregnant (false pregnancy can also lead to milk production)

Poor girl. I would suspect that she may have organ enlargement and not a false pregnancy, especially if he mammary glands and vulva are normal size and she isn’t producing milk. I would recommend considering getting an abdominal radiograph done on Umi to look for any enlargements in the abdomen. Hopefully this will give you your answer. Vomiting and discharge are not normal symptoms of pregnancy in a dog and may indicate infection. I would not generally increase feeding guidelines until the last 2 weeks or if weight loss develops, the majority of energy demands for growth are the last 2 weeks of pregnancy and peak milk development. Obesity should be avoided as it can cause complications in itself

Hello, sorry to hear about Bella. Dogs may indeed sense a change in people which can than indirectly affect their behaviors. However, I would recommend having Bella evaluated as she may herself be undergoing a false pregnancy. This could cause behavioral changes in her as well. Hi, thanks for using PetCoach! I do not think the red skin lesions are related to Mira's false pregnancy. If she was outside in the last day or so they are likely black fly bites. If they are they tend to fade away with in a few days and do not require treatment. If more appears and she hasn't been outside then I would take her to the Vet, especially if you notice pin point spots on her ears or her gums are bleeding. As for the weight loss that is something you should pursue with your Vet, without knowing her age it is hard to provide accurate reasons for weight loss. Some causes are: diabetes, kidney or liver disease, cancer, due to her false pregnancy or intestinal disease (IBD, food allergy). There is always a possibility of any female dog who is not spayed for pregnancy. I recommend to have your pup examined by the veterinarian. She looks small and so it would be recommended to take a radiograph to see if puppies are present or not. Small breed dogs are more prone to problems giving birth so it is important to know how many puppies to expect. She likely is not caught up on vaccines or anything either if you have not had her examined yet so you need to discuss the preventive care that she needs to keep her and the puppies healthy if she is pregnant. The timing and symptoms could point to a false pregnancy. Have a examined by your veterinarian for confirmation. Treatment is typically not required in mild cases. Symptoms should abate within 2-3 weeks. If they don't or her behavior worsens, your vet can dispense medications to decrease milk production and possibly tranquilizers/sedatives for anxiety. Severe cases can be treated with hormone replacement therapy. To prevent​ future episodes, having her spayed would be the recommended course of action.
