Why are my dog's hind legs suddenly weak, lethargic, belly swollen?

Poor Cotton! I'm sorry to hear that he's not feeling well. Unfortunately, this sounds like quite a serious problem. A swollen abdomen can be caused by a number of different things, including heart disease, liver disease, internal bleeding. or an abdominal tumor of some kind. His rear leg issues could be caused by some type of neurologic problem, or could be due to overall weakness due to whatever is causing the abdominal swelling. Lethargy is a very vague symptom that could be caused by almost any kind of illness. I would recommend taking Cotton to the vet for an exam right away, as this may be a life-threatening problem. Your veterinarian can do blood work and x-rays or an abdominal ultrasound if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate treatment.

Loss of function in the rear legs is most often due to a "slipped" or herniated disc in the spine, but could also be due to some other neurologic problem or illness. This indicates severe nerve damage to the nerves that control the lower legs and possibly the bladder and bowels. This is an emergency and it's important to take him to the vet as soon as possible to prevent him from having serious complications. Take care when moving him and try to avoid any strain or jerking movements to the spine. The vet will be able to identify the cause of this and can at-least make him feel better. Not being able to walk all of a sudden is an emergency and you need to take Paris to your vet now. If this is caused by a prolapsed disc, then time is of the essence, ie treatment with NSAIDs, pain medication and strict cage rest as early as possible increases the chance of recuperation. There can be other reasons for not being able to walk, and only a hands-on exam will facilitate a diagnosis. Your vet will want to do radiographs, possibly blood tests and do a thorough orthopedic and neurological exam.
