My dog's waxy ears have yellow discharge and won't get better. Help!

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 60 lbs

I have a medium size, long eared dog who is having ear problems. They have been very waxy and now have a yellow discharge too. A Veterinary visit isn't possible as he is petrified of everyone. We have used ear cleaner, ear drops and a product called Sonotix. His ears improve but then are bad again. Any help would be much appreciated. Thank you. Sue Henderson

It would be helpful to have a vet sedate Maxell for a thorough examination and cleaning of the ears. The results would then guide the most appropriate long term mangament. Cleaning 1-2 times weekly will likely be required to try to prevent wax build up, I would also recommend a diet specially formulated for skin conditions (the ears are lined by skin and often affected by ongoing skin inflammation). Other triggers can be hormonal disease, food allergies and swelling/narrowing inside the ear
