My puppy was stung by a wasp. Can I give her aspirin for the pain?

You can cool the area where the sting is with some ice wrapped in a cloth. This will take the pain and reduce the swelling. By tomorrow the area should look normal again. If your puppy starts to vomit, gets breathing problems or appears ill, you will need to take it to a pet ER for treatment.

She may be having an allergic reaction to the sting. Also, this appears to be causing her pain which may be why she is not eating. It is hard to know without an examination but this is certainly concerning. They would be able to examine her and determine what would be best to treat her with. Good luck and have a good night!

I don’t recommend starting any medications without first consulting your veterinarian. Treating your pet at home without having seen your vet first could mask symptoms that could lead to a quicker diagnosis should it become necessary for your pet to be examined. Arbitrary administration of antibiotics without knowing if it is appropriate for the condition is what creates antibiotic-resistant organisms. Absolutely DO NOT give your dog Tylenol, or any other human analgesic or NSAID. At best, they cause gastric bleeding, at worst they are toxic to liver and kidneys. Consult your veterinarian before giving your dog medications of any kind.

There's really nothing that safe to give him over the counter for pain. Apply a cool compress to the area but the pain will likely subside within a few hours. Monitor him for any swelling of the face or trouble breathing. Also make sure the stinger is out. I hope Hugo feels better quickly!

They do tend to swell varying amounts when they get stung by bees, but they don't tend to have severe complications, so I would not worry too much right now. You can safely give one 50mg tablet of benadryl by mouth to help prevent allergic reactions. Just know that this will make him drowsy. An allergic reaction normally happens within the first couple of hours, so if he's doing OK by the end of the day, then he should be fine. If he starts vomiting, you notice his face swell excessively, or he seems to have trouble breathing, then these would be signs of an allergic reaction that needs emergency vet treatment. Hello there! The amount of aspirin you gave to Whitney is probably not enough to hurt her, however it is my general recommendation to avoid giving aspirin to dogs whenever possible. Aspirin is very hard on a dog's stomach, and can cause gastrointestinal distress and even ulcers or organ failure if given in too large of a dose, or over a long period of time. There are now lots of pain medications available that are made specifically for dogs that have less of an effect of their body, though they are only available through your vet or a veterinary pharmacy. If you have a relationship with a veterinarian, they may be willing to write you a prescription for a dog-safe pain medication if Whitney has been seen at the office recently. You may be required to go in for a visit if it has been a while, however, as there must be a recent client-veterinarian-patient relationship for the vet to dispense or prescribe these drugs safely. Poor Wednesday! Unfortunately, I am unable to prescribe any medication without examining Wednesday myself. I do not recommend giving her aspirin, as it may have some unwanted side effects in dogs such as damage to the kidneys, gastric ulcers, and bleeding issues when given in high doses. She should definitely be seen by a vet as soon as possible, especially because she is limping. Your vet can take x-rays to see where the trauma is, and perform blood work to make sure that Wednesday's organs are functioning properly to handle any pain medication, as well as place a cast or splint if necessary.
