Why is my dog vomiting and in pain after a seizure? Is it serious?

Poor Oliver! He really needs to see a veterinarian as an examination, blood work, and imaging (like X-rays) will be necessary to determine the cause of seizures. Unfortunately cancer is a common cause of seizures in an older dog. Medication can be prescribed to reduce the seizure activity and to give Oliver a better quality of life. Six days of straight vomiting is quite concerning, particularly in an older dog like Oreo. Since he just had cataracts removed, I am going to operate under the assumption they probably did some pre-anesthetic blood work and would have told you if they found anything of concern. While four weeks is enough time to elapse for something new to show up, if there was a condition that was somewhere chronic in nature I would have expected at least some mild indicators of disease on this blood work. Given the symptoms have only just begun in the last week, I doubt the antibiotics are the culprit. Vomiting for that length of time in an older dog usually makes me think of foreign object ingestion, kidney / liver disease, or some type of cancer in or around the GI tract. I would recommend diagnostic imaging in the form of x-rays and/or ultrasound to rule in / out certain processes. If nothing is found to explain the vomiting, the doctor may recommend referral for an endoscopy of the upper / lower GI tract. Hope this makes sense.

Vomiting and bloody stools can occur from many conditions such as foreign body ingestion and obstruction, pancreatitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, among other possibilities. If he is having seizures that make this very serious as this is possibly unrelated and could be seen with conditions such as low blood sugar from vomiting, brain inflammation, epilepsy, among other possibilities. I recommend that you have Bruno evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. This will likely require bloodwork and abdominal imaging in terms of diagnostics and possibly an MRI. Treatment would be based on findings. At the very least your veterinarian could start him on medications to make him feel better. In the meantime, keep water available at all times to try to prevent dehydration. She is cute! Vomiting can cause a vasovagal response and the animal could have a syncopal episode (fainting) but I don't believe it would cause a seizure. Are you sure your dog is having a seizure and not just fainting? I know of dogs that vomiting because of the seizure but since you actually induced vomiting that doesn't make sense. Bailey will likely be lethargic and incoordinated after this seizure and it will take a while for them to resolve. If Bailey has not been seen for these seizures by a veterinarian then I would highly recommend having Bailey examined by a vet so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. For now, let him rest and provide plenty of water for him. The sooner he is seen the better. Place him in a quiet area so that there are no triggers (light, noise, etc) that may set off another seizure. Tyler may have had a seizure. I do recommend bringing him into your vet’s for screening bloodwork to rule out severe liver/kidney issues that may cause seizures. If the episode happens again, keep him away from stairs and away from objects that he may hurt himself on during the seizure and stay away from his mouth to avoid being accidentally bitten. Vets generally do not start dogs on seizure medications unless they have had 2 or more seizures in a month or have a seizure lasting more than a few minutes. You can also inquire with your vet about a diet called Purina Neurocare that has helped many dogs with seizures/epilepsy. Good luck!

It sounds like seizure activity to me. Not all seizures are grand mal where the dog falls over and starts paddling. I suggest you get him back to the vet for a follow-up and discuss putting him on some anti-seizure medication. Occasionally severe pain can cause these types of symptoms. It is possible that the gallstones may be causing him some random pain. Most often though, gallstones do not cause any problems in dogs like they do in people. Again, talk to your vet about your options.
