My dog is throwing up while on Flagyl for a bacterial infection. Why?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 5 months and 10 days old | 85 lbs

Our dog has had a bacteria infection, and the vet prescribed us flagyl 500 to give to him twice a day. We have about 3 more days left on the medication and Zeus threw up yesterday, then today he threw up 3 times, is this to be concerned about? Or is it a side effect?

It can be a side effect but it may be related to the original infection also. I would stop the medicine for 24 hours and see how he does. If the vomiting stops then you can blame it on the medicine. If the vomiting continues then he will need to be rechecked.
