Puppy with high blood tests & vomiting. Is it kidney damage?

Please, get in touch with your vet as Christie needs a blood test called 'biochemistry' to check her kidney values, blood glucose level, liver enzymes etc. Excessive drinking and vomiting can be related to uterine infection (if Christie has not been neutered), kidney disease, liver problems, diabetes, tumor development and more. Christie really needs a blood test and ideally ultrasound scan or x-ray of the abdomen to find out what the problem is.

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The BUN and CREA are the most worrying symptoms indeed. It means that Pushka's kidneys are not working very well. A urine test should be the next step of investigation to rule in/out kidney infection and intoxication. Also, ultrasound scan of the kidneys may help to make the final diagnosis. Other blood parameters that are abnormal could be related to the kidney problems or not. High RBC, HCT, HCT could be due to dehydration, but it may be caused, for example by kidney problems. Unfortunately, a complete blood chemistry panel that includes a urinalysis is very accurate for kidney disease. I'm sorry to hear that Caramel is not feeling well. The paperwork showing "female" instead of male is a typo somewhere. Nothing that was run in those tests determine's the dog's sex, so I suspect that was entered wrong at the lab. His kidney values are a bit high, but they aren't crazy high. If a urinalysis was not performed, talk to your vet about running a urinalysis as well, as this will help determine whether those values being high may be in part due to whether or not he is dehydrated (typically the "USG" or "urine specific gravity" is what we are looking for to help interpret this). You may also want to talk to your vet about an abdominal ultrasound (sonogram of the belly); having images of the kidneys and bladder as well as the rest of the abdominal organs (liver, pancreas, GI tract, spleen, adrenal glands) can be helpful in terms of what the most likely cause of his clinical signs are. Another consideration since he is "hardly able to get up" would be a painful condition that's making him not want to move; ask your vet if he seems painful anywhere. To summarize, here is what I recommend you do. Take him to your vet and ask about a urinalysis. Ask your vet if he seems painful anywhere (belly, back, neck, joints). The BUN and creatinine values are extremely high indicating that the kidneys are not working to clear the toxins out of his blood stream and this is very serious and indeed potentially life threatening. The low red blood count or anemia is also a concern and may be linked either to blood borne parasites or kidney failure. Intensive fluid treatment and kidney support is required, in many cases of sudden onset kidney injury in younger dogs, recovery is possible if there is enough normal kidney working in the short term

How naughty of Hector to get into some grapes! It is extremely encouraging that his kidney values (particularly the creatinine and BUN) are within a normal range. The SDMA value is thought to be of use in detecting early signs of chronic kidney disease, but is not of much value when concerns about acute kidney disease arise (as in the case of grape ingestion). Remember that there is a wide range of normal to account for individual variation and values at the higher end of this normal range do not typically indicate a problem. I can see that Hector's ALT (a liver value) is mildly elevated, but in all honesty, I do not worry about elevations in this value until they are about twice the upper limits of normal (>240, whereas Hector's value is 181). That said, it is still worth asking your vet if it is possible simply to recheck this value in another week or two. It will most likely return to normal, but if it remains high or increases further, ongoing monitoring of the ALT and further diagnostic testing (bile acid testing, abdominal ultrasound, etc.) may be indicated. BUN and CREA are severely elevated and the cause of it should be ideally understood by performing a urine analysis (and specifically a urine specific gravity to rule out kidney failure). Mild anemia (lower RBCs) can be present during kidney failure. Amylase is another important value as severe elevation could be compatible with pancreatitis, which can cause the signs you are describing. CPLI test can be performed as well to rule out pancreatitis. Please discuss all the options with your local vet.
