My dog vomits frequently but seems fine. When is a vet needed?

Hello, and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. The licking of other dogs' private parts is a gross habit, but probably not the cause of the vomiting. Causes of vomiting in a puppy can include dietary intolerance or indiscretion, food allergy, intestinal parasites, GI blockage, gastroenteritis, bacterial or viral infection (including parvo virus if not completely vaccinated), among a few others. If the vomiting lasts longer than 12-24 hours, or if Prince develops other symptoms, such as diarrhea, lethargy, abdominal pain, etc he should see a vet as soon as possible. I would only offer small meals of Prince's normal puppy food, or small pieces of boiled chicken breast in this period. If he isn't interested in food, it may be a sign that he is very nauseous and he should get checked out by a vet. I hope he starts feeling better soon!

I'm sorry to hear that Chalula has been vomiting so frequently. This is not normal and she will need to be seen by her veterinarian. Depending on her examination findings, she may need laboratory work and abdominal x-rays. Unfortunately, those are quite nonspecific symptoms, and could be consistent with almost any illness. If Prince isn't eating or drinking, and is vomiting, he really needs to be evaluated by a veterinarian. Your vet can determine quite a lot by a good exam, and will then be able to recommend any appropriate diagnostic tests to determine what's wrong. At the very least, your vet can help Prince feel better with supportive care to control his nausea, and give fluids to correct his dehydration. I worry especially with his young age and being such a little guy, he can become dehydrated quickly. I hope he feels better soon!

Poor Prince sounds extremely ill if he just throws up food and is extremely skinny. In my opinion, this is a medical emergency and he should see a vet right away. He could have a foreign body preventing him from keeping down food, or a severe GI illness. He needs veterinary care now to diagnose what is causing this problem so he can be treated. Please take him into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. The information to reach that vet is found on a clinic's answering machine or website.

Poor Thor! Seven times in an hour is rather concerning. I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible to be sure he hasn't eaten something that has or possibly could get stuck. If they don't find anything he could also benefit from some fluids and maybe something to control the vomiting if he continues to vomit. Hope this helps and Thor feels better soon.

If Leo is vomiting 2-4x a week routinely I would be concerned because this is not normal for dogs. In the pictures you provided it looks like the food is not fully digested. I would be worried about gastritis, a blockage, or irritable bowel disease. My best recommendation is to take Leo to the vet so the issue can be sorted out. They may recommend lab work and x-rays.
