My dog vomited this morning. What could be the cause and next steps?

If the vomiting hasn’t improved on a bland diet, I would recommend Puchiwilly be evaluated by a veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his vomiting, have any necessary testing done (X-rays, bloodwork), and start any treatment that he may need to resolve the issue. Vomiting and diarrhea can be caused by many conditions primarily gastrointestinal in nature such gastroenteritis and gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction or other conditions such as pancreatitis or kidney disease. I recommend that you have your pup evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Likely diagnostics to be performed include abdominal imaging and general bloodwork. You could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. Good luck and have a great day!

For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Bambi evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid he is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check his hydration status and give him medications to make him feel better. Good luck!

Causes for vomiting and not eating are: viral or bacterial infections, liver or kidney problems, cancer, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross), ate something that is stuck, toxin ingestion, new food/treat/table food or the broth. Any new food could cause an upset stomach. i would with hold water for 6 hours and food for 12 hours. If Odie continues to vomit during the fast he should see a Vet. If there is no vomiting for the first 6 hours, offer small amounts of water. If he holds down the water then start a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice as small frequent meals at the 12 hour mark. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or continues to vomit he needs to see a Vet for an exam, blood work and belly X-rays. I hope this helps and i wish Odie the very best!

Many times the diet is responsible for any abnormal GI symptoms. I would recommend switching to a different food altogether and consider adding in a probiotic such as Purina Fortiflora. If this does not help, I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. I hope this helps! If Buddy seems off and is whimpering and vomiting, he may have something going on causing him discomfort. Because of his age, I would be suspicious of a viral infection, something he ate that he is having an indiscretion to or a foreign object he ate that is lodged somewhere in his intestines causing problems. Because there are multiple causes and it is difficult to determine what it is for sure, I would have a veterinarian examine Buddy so that the most appropriate diagnostic and treatment recommendations can be made. As long as Bo is behaving normally otherwise, you may be able to [manage her at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea). I recommend withholding food for 12-24 hours. Resume feeding a bland diet (boiled boneless/skinless chicken breast mixed with plain cooked white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount as long as she doesn't vomit. Feed the bland diet until the stool is consistently normal (usually several days), then transition slowly to the new diet over another 5-7 days. [Veterinary probiotics](https://www.petcoach.co/article/probiotics-and-prebiotics-bacteria-aren-t-all-bad) may be considered to promote gut health. If she continues to vomit and have diarrhea, or develops lethargy, loss of appetite, or abdominal pain in spite of a bland diet, she will need to see a vet as soon as possible.
