My dog is throwing up after an injury. Is it a stomach perforation?

I can see a few areas in the x-ray that would concern me although I don’t think there’s an obvious foreign body or obstruction. It might be more obvious in person - it’s difficult to look at x-rays on a phone. Any time a dog is continuing to vomit despite appropriate treatment with anti nausea medication I get concerned, and it sounds like exploratory surgery might be the next step.

Oh my! This sounds like she may have a diaphragmatic hernia due to trauma from the car. A diaphragmatic hernia is common to occur after a hit by car. The stomach and abdominal organs are pushed up into the chest cavity, causing breathing difficulty in many cases and problems keeping down food. Other possible causes of her continuous vomiting is stomach bloat and an intestinal blockage (intussusception). These are all quite serious conditions that are considered medical emergencies. There isn't much you can do for any of these possible scenarios at home unfortunately. She needs radiographs done right away to diagnose the problem and then proper treatment. It seems there is something in the stomach indeed but it is not likely to cause an obstruction, it could be the cause of the symptoms though but an ultrasound is indeed necessary to confirm it. another option is to repeat the xray with contrast media in order to get a better idea regarding what could be in the stomach.

I am very sorry to hear about your labrador. It sounds like he needs to have diagnostic imaging (x-rays or preferably ultrasound) performed to examine the abdominal cavity, or if that is not an option, an exploratory surgery may be needed. I would be concerned about a large abscess or a tumor that had a cystic or abscessed area, but truly to determine the cause and whether or not treatment will be helpful further investigation is needed.

Lexi's stomach is probably still very inflammed from eating (and attempting to digest) the book cover. Inflammation of the lining of the stomach is called gastritis. Sometimes gastritis can resolve on its own after a couple of days but sometimes dogs need medication to help keep them comfortable while they are going through it. While Lexi is recovering from this, feed her small meals more frequently of an easily digestible diet such as plain boiled chicken and rice. There is a small chance that the book cover has caused a blockage, either in the stomach or intestines. I would recommend keeping a very close eye on Lexi over the next 24 hours. If she cannot stop vomiting, develops diarrhea, or stops wanting to eat, then I would take her to the vet to have X-rays performed to look for a blockage. I hope this helps. Best of luck.

Hi, sorry to hear your dog is having this problem. I would recommend an ultrasound to make sure he does not have Inflammatory bowel disorder or a foreign body that does not show up on x ray. Some foreign objects can migrate throughout the GI tract so they can sometimes cause problems and sometimes be fine. An infection would not cause this problem. The anti vomiting injection only lasts 24 hours so if he did not vomit on that, you can try oral tablet of it. But if he did vomit through the injection, it is more likely he has a foreign body. If your vet cannot do an abdominal ultrasound, I would go to a specialist who has an ultrasound and is good at them to find out what is wrong Good luck, I hope this helps!

I am sorry to hear that your pet may have an intestinal puncture. If he did he would be having profuse vomiting, lack of appetite and few feces. The only way to fix an intestinal rupture is through surgery. The vet will confirm this via x-ray and physical exam findings and then in surgery the hole would be found and then sutured closed.
