My Yorkie has Valley Fever. Why is he losing hair on Fluconazole?

Hello. Valley Fever is a fungal infection that typically originated in southwestern United States. Dogs contract it by inhaling spores from the fungus which lives in the soil. There are different prognoses for Valley Fever depending on how severe or advanced the infection is. If it is isolated to the respiratory tract, lungs...the prognosis is good but requires long term treatment ....usually 6-12 months of oral antifungal medications. If the infection has settled in bones , lymph nodes or internal organs require treatment for up to a few years and the prognosis is guarded. The most advanced form involves the brain and/or spinal cord. This can require lifelong treatment. The medications are somewhat expensive and can have side effects. Your veterinarian may periodically want to do bloodwork to make sure the medication is not causing problems such as liver disease. This is not a quick fix disease and it would be important to know how advanced this dog’s infection is so you can plan on the future expenses and treatment plan. Skin can be very frustrating. The most common cause of skin irritation is allergies (food, flea or environmental). However skin mites, endocrine and auto immune disease can also cause skin issues. I would recommend applying flea prevention every 30 days year round to make sure the fleas are not an issue. Also if the skin is not resolving Kim might need medications for longer, stronger medications or more testing like a skin scrape for mites or biopsy for auto immune disease. I recommend taking Kim back tot he vet to discuss the skin not resolving and further testing. Hope that helps and thanks for using pet coach

Hello, sorry to hear about Blaky. Those medications are likely prescribed to treat ringworm, a fungal infection. However, if Blaky is itchy, he may have a secondary bacterial or yeast infection as well. Finally, he could be very itchy from a separate problem such as fleas or mites. If he continues to be itchy, then have Blaky re-evaluated. Most often ringworm will resolve with long term medication, up to months. Fleas, mites, and bacterial infections may respond much quicker. Hello and thank you for your post! I have used Fluconazole multiple times for yeast infections and 200mg twice daily is within the dosing range. I would discuss this with your prescribing veterinarian first before switching as different drugs are used in different circumstances. In my experience, Fluconazole has less side effects than Ketoconazole and I prefer Fluconazole. I do not know what concentration your amoxicillin syrup is, but if it is just a yeast infection, an antibiotic like amoxicillin is not going to help. Levofenil is a human product and has not been tested for use in animals, so I would avoid using this solution for treating Milo. I would recommend bathing Milo twice weekly with Duoxo Chlorhexidine PS combination shampoo until resolved. This shampoo will treat bacterial and fungal skin infections and it does so quite well. It could be that Munchie has a skin infection or a fungal infection causing his fur to fall out in chunks. It could also be due to fleas, mites, ringworm, or a hormonal imbalance. You need to take him into the vet. The vet can diagnose what is causing his hair loss, and can treat him for it. I'd call his vet first thing in the morning to make him an appointment. She could still be suffering from Tick fever, this disease is known to be very resistant to treatment and it sometimes takes several months of treatment to get rid of it. you will need to take her back to the vet ASAP in order to resume the antibiotic treatment, this time for a longer period of time.

Your dog needs to see a veterinarian for a skin scraping to rule out parasites and then a culture to see if there is an underlying bacterial or skin infection. Place a cone on him to prevent licking and chewing.
