Why is my dog losing fur in chunks and has scabs on his muzzle?

Poor Chiko! There are many different things that could cause itching, scabs, and hair loss like this. Some common possibilities would include allergies (food allergies, or an allergy to something in the environment), a bacterial or fungal skin infection, or skin mites (mange). Treatment will depend on what the underlying problem is, so it's important to get a diagnosis first. Because of this, I would recommend taking Chiko to the vet tomorrow for an exam. He/she can do some simple skin tests if needed to help diagnose the problem and get him started on appropriate medication to treat it. In the meantime, you can try bathing him in an aloe and oatmeal dog shampoo if you want to - this will not treat the underying problem causing his symptoms, but may help to soothe his skin and make him a bit more comfortable until you are able to see the vet.

The hair is coming off as the scab starts to fall off. So the hair isn’t the problem, it is what is causing the scabs to form in the first place. The most common cause would be pyoderma (infection caused by either bacteria or yeast/fungus). I can see that Benji has a few small areas of hair loss with yellow crusting, and these lesions could be due to ringworm, mange, or a skin infection. In order to accurately diagnose these lesions, a vet should perform a skin scraping and fungal culture/Wood's lamp exam. Both ringworm and Sarcoptic mange (scabies) can be transmitted to other dogs and humans, so it is certainly worth having the lesions evaluated. I hope that Benji is on the mend soon!

It looks like he has mange. What you are doing for treatment won't hurt but it won't help either if mange is the diagnosis. I cannot diagnosis him from a photo. I suggest you ask your vet about the possibility of mange and get testing/treatment for that.

Hi there. A couple things could be causing the hair loss on Annie Mae. She may have skin parasites which is causing her hair to break off in chunks. She may also have a skin allergy or a wound that caused her to loose the hair. I would recommend having her skin checked by your veterinarian to narrow down the cause and get her treated. It sounds like there are a few things going on with Amigo. The losing fur could be due to fleas, mites, allergies, ringworm, skin infection, or hormone imbalance. The diarrhea could be caused by a sudden change in diet, intestinal worms, GI illness, eating something rotten, or a foreign body. He needs to see a vet for these problems. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Chubby! He is SOO cute! I think Chubby should see a vet. I am not familiar with an incurable fungal skin infection in pugs. Possible causes are: bacterial skin infection, demodex, or ring worm. I would have a skin scrape done to check for mites and then put him on an oral flea and tick medication like Nexgard, Simparica and Bravecto which also kills demodex. I would submit sample for a fungal culture to rule out ring worm. If he has a bacterial skin infection then antibiotics are used. I hope this helps and I wish Chubby a speedy recovery!
