What's the average cost for pet vaccinations and flea/tick prevention?

It looks like the DA2PLCPV is the distemper parvo vaccine. I'm not sure who sets the prices but that vaccine does contain 5 different diseases so I assume that has something to do with the cost but this vaccine is not extremely expensive. Flea and tick prevention have nothing to do with heartworm prevention or any diseases. Just like heartworm prevention has nothing to do with distemper parvo or fleas and ticks. Dogs require a lot of up keep if you want to do your best to keep them healthy and it is recommended that all dogs stay current on vaccinations. Depending on where you live, fleas, ticks and heartworms can be seasonal but it can also be year round. With the shifting of the human population and the pets they bring with them across the country, parasite prevalence is changing and becoming more of a problem (pets bring the diseases/parasites with them). Speaking with a local veterinarian is your best option to learn Midnight's risk factors and what prevention is needed and when. Also, if Midnight is not spayed, I recommend to get that done. You can avoid many serious (and costly) health conditions by having her spayed. Costs do vary based upon where you live and if you go to a vaccine clinic or not. If you are seeking the care of a vet for your pet, I would recommend searching for local vets to your region and establishing a relationship with one, particularly with a new puppy. As far as flea/tick medications, there are many options that come in many different formulations ranging from topical, collars, orals, and injectable drugs. If a pet is heavily infested with fleas, typically we use a drug to kill all the live fleas first and follow that up with the preventative, whichever one you and your vet agree upon. In most instances, these drugs work quite different dependent upon your geographic location so this would once again be a discussion with your vet. The cost of the medication will largely depend upon which one you choose and where you end up obtaining it. Also, dependent upon the extent of the flea infestation, additional treatments may be suggested to get Khloe back on the right track. Hope this makes sense.

Hi. Great questions. Puppies should begin vaccines at 8 weeks old. Then they need vaccines every 3-4 weeks until the puppy is 16-18 weeks. It is then once a year after that. They do need a physical exam with every shot, they need a fecal rest in the first visit, and to start heartworm prevention. I would not be surprised that it does get close to 100 dollars a visit during these boosters. The positive thing is its only once a year after that :) I don't think you are being taken advantage of. Just know that none of us go in to this field to take advantage of clients. I hope that helps. And if you do feel it's too expensive, you can shop around. The negative to remember one that is you get what you pay for, and you have to go to someone you like. Congrats on puppies!

Unfortunately we do not have "shots" that cover all these problems. The only injections I am aware of that offer some protection are the Program shot, which lasts 6 months and will prevent fleas from reproducing but doesn't kill fleas on your dog, and praziquantel which is an injection for tapeworms. There is also an injection to prevent heartworms called Proheart that is once every 6 months. Most people choose to do topical or oral products for flea/tick/intestinal parasites. My favorite product is Nexgaurd for fleas and ticks, which is a chewable once a month flea and tick preventative. There is a newer oral product called Bravecto which covers fleas and ticks, and lasts 3 months. I haven't used it but have heard great things. For heartworms and intestinal parasites I like the products iverheart, heartgard, sentinel, and interceptor. They prevent heartworms and the more common intestinal worms, and must be given monthly.

You can get all of this done at a Vetco clinic, and I will put a link below to prices for vaccines. Nail trims are typically around $10-15, and you will have to get a quote from them for a bath. The vet can recommend a flea treatment for her. Please, please DO NOT give her vaccines from the feed store. There have been so many cases of dogs coming down with parvo and distemper who were vaccinated at home by their owners. This is because the feed store often stores the vaccines incorrectly and/or the owner gives the vaccine wrong. Bessie's health is too important to risk, so please get her vaccines done with the vet.
