Dog UTI: Is 2 weeks of Cipro enough if blood in urine stopped?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I am sorry to hear Hazel isn't feeling well. The cephalexin is an antibiotic used to kill the bacteria in her bladder. Bacteria cause inflammation to the bladder wall and this can cause blood in the urine. I would expect to not be able to see the blood in the urine in 24-48 hours. However, sometimes blood is microscopic, so it may be there even if you can't see it. If it has been longer than 48 hours and you are still seeing blood I would talk to the veterinarian that gave Hazel the antibiotics about possible x-rays or an ultrasound to look for bladder stones. Bladder stones can cause constant inflammation to the bladder wall and the antibiotics alone won't help with the blood. If there are no stones, I would talk to the veterinarian about anti-inflammatory options to help decrease the inflammation of the bladder wall and stop the blood. Poor girl. Yes it can be normal for pets to still have blood in their urine unfortunately for up to 48 to 72 hours after taking antibiotics. However you should see improvement with the blood every day and your pet should still be active alert and relatively stable otherwise.

In general, a dog should be off antibiotics for 10-14 days prior to a urine culture, but sometimes we will culture a dog that has not been off antibiotics that long if we suspect that there is still an infection. I would certainly discuss that with the specialist and get their recommendation. Poor Scout. I agree, give him a couple of days to see if the antibiotics help. If they don't, his urine is very blood, he appears ill, lethargic, or distressed, take him back into a vet immediately.

I would recommend taking Crybaby back to the vet for re-evaluation. Some dogs can have recurrent UTIs, but often they are secondary to a bigger issue, such as bladder stones, cancer, or anatomical issues. Another round of antibiotics may help, but may just cover up the bigger issue, again.

This could be due to an infection that is resistant to the antibiotics being given or it could be something else like stones or a tumor. I highly recommend that you consider taking Tao to his veterinarian for reevaluation. Diagnostics that should be considered at this point include a urine culture to make sure that if there is an infection, you know which antibiotic would be best to use.
