Dog urine test 1.060: Is it good? When's the best time to test?

I'm not seeing a cause for increased thirst in these results. That seems like a lot of bilirubin, but this part of the test sometimes is not as accurate so it's not necessarily something to be concerned about. She doesn't have a large amount of glucose in her urine, so diabetes would be an unlikely cause of her increased thirst. What I'm not sure about is the specific gravity - this would typically be 4 numbers. I'm wondering if her specific gravity is supposed to be 1.005 or if it is supposed to be 1.050. The first would indicate a very dilute urine in which case you should see your vet to discuss additional testing to determine why she is drinking so much - blood work might be recommended to start. 1.050 would be quite concentrated, and I honestly would not worry about perceived increased thirst if this was her specific gravity. I believe that you get a consultation with some of the Petnostics tests which would be a little more helpful as it is more of a back and forth conversation. You could check your package to see if there are more details.

That would depend on the hydration status of Woody and the blood values BUN and CREA (that are essentially elevated in kidney failure). If BUN and UREA are normal and USG is 1.018 means that kidneys are working absolutely normally. This is best to discuss during a one-on-one consultation; however, the blood work results reveal that your pet has a high white blood cell count (indicates infection or inflammation), mild anemia (low red blood cells), a UTI with a low specific gravity (concentrating ability of the kidneys which should be rechecked once UTI resolved, as well as protein in the urine which should be rechecked after resolution of UTI. as well as high BUN, CREA, which suggests kidney damage or kidney failure. Because of the concurrent UTI, it is best to resolve the UTI with anti-biotics, perhaps consider a SDMA test (specific kidney disease test) to confirm suspected kidney disease/insufficiency, and then rechk Urinalysis in 2 weeks. I am not sure why your pet is on Lasix, unless there is also underlying heart diseasee, which could have caused the erroneous reading of low specific gravity on the test. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Technically, we have to have a urine concentration to know for sure if the kidneys are affected. Those values (urea and creat) could have been caused by mild dehydration. If so, the kidneys are fine. If the urine is dilute and watery, then yes I am worried more about kidney damage. Talk to your vet about checking the concentration (USG) of the first urine of the morning. Best of luck to you and Max!

Your veterinarian is correct that it could be related to the diet and some dehydration. You definitely should follow up with another blood test in three months or have a different kind of test called an SDMA. The SDMA will catch kidney disease well before there is an increase in the kidney enzymes levels. Talk to your veterinarian about this option. A higher fluid diet should result in a lower specific gravity (she should be excreting more water than when on a drier diet). Test strips are poorly accurate for specific gravity and this should be cross-checked with a refractometer to determine the exact value especially if she has any history of urinary issues. Monitoring of the pH would be recommended as a slightly acidic urine is normal (fresh samples are required as it will change over time/storage); acidic urine helps to provide a natural barrier to infection.

Actually your dog's urinalysis looks very good. There are various reasons for a dog's urine to become alkaline (pH greater than If the urine has been retained in the bladder for too long, it becomes stale. Also, if the urine has been standing too long, ie was not fresh. Contamination with detergent from a collecting bottle that was not rinsed well. Contaminated with ammonia Conditions that can cause alkaline urine: Urinary tract infection with urease-positive bacteria - most common cause (likely not in your case) Persistent vomiting - due to loss of gastric acid. (is your dog vomiting a lot?) Respiratory alkalosis and some other conditions which are rare. If your dog is taking medications, it can cause alkaline urine: e.g. acetazolamide, thiazide diuretics, potassium citrate, sodium acetate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium lactate And finally, Special diets formulated to produce an alkaline urine eg Hill's Precription Diet Canine u/d Alkaline urine can cause kidney and bladder stones. I suggest you have your vet check the pH of your dogs urine again, this time with fresh urine won shortly before testing.
