My dog's mammary tumor has an open sore. Will it heal naturally?

The tumor has become very ulcerated and necrotic. It needs to be removed, likely by a specialist. In the meantime, she should wear a cone to prevent licking and a t-shirt to prevent it from rubbing on the ground. She may need antibiotics to treat any underlying infection and pain medication. I would have her assessed by a veterinarian asap.

I recommend to take Greta to see her veterinarian. While most skin masses are benign, masses that a red/pink, hairless and raised are a concern for a malignant skin tumor called a Mast Cell tumor. It also appears as though this mass is ulcerated regardless and it needs to be removed. Once masses grow to the point of ulceration, they will heal and break open over and over again which can make them prone to infections not to mention oozing/bleeding. Just like with a human, the doctor will likely take a sample of the mass or remove the mass entirely and microscopically exam it. Thats the only way to know what it is accurately. In the mean time, protect the mass from trauma and wash it daily with an antibacterial hand soap (rinse it well). You can apply a small amount of coconut oil and rub it well into the skin. It looks like that growth has ulcerated, meaning the skin has become too thin and weak because of growth of the mass and is starting to break in places. It needs to be removed surgically at this point. When it's removed, it can also be sampled to determine what sort of mass it is and if further treatment is needed. It could definitely be a fatty tumor still. It's also possible to get incorrect results from a fine need aspirate, so it could be something else. This definitely cannot wait until the 23rd but she could probably wait until the 16th if your vet is doing the surgery that day. until then it's mainly a case of keeping the ulcerated tumor clean as much as possible, if necessary it is possible to bandage the area as well with special dressing. if it is bleeding profusely you will need to take her to an emergency center today.

Place an e-collar (cone) to prevent licking. Keep the area clean and dry. A dab of a triple antibiotic ointment once or twice daily may help. Monitor for swelling, discharge or discomfort associated with the area. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian. Since the skin is broken, he is at risk for infection and may need antibiotics. If he is painful, your vet can prescribe or dispense a pain medication also.

Poor guy. I would recommend cleaning it with an antiseptic like Betadine diluted 50:50 with warm water OR Chlorhexidine solution 3% or 2% diluted with water until light blue mixture. This will help keep the area clean until you can get him in to see your vet. You can try placing an oversized t-shirt on him to help keep the area from being rubbed constantly when he lays down. If there is a secondary infection associated with the ulcer than it will help. If the ulcer is caused by trauma from his tongue touching his teeth than it might not help completely. If there is a veterinary dentist in your area than you could have your dog evaluated to see if there is anything that can be done with the teeth to help prevent the problem.
