My dog is twitching, can't sleep, and won't drink. What's wrong?

Unfortunately with out some testing I cannot tell you exactly what caused her episodes. It is possible she could have low blood sugar, a liver shunt, congenital disease (born with an issue), seizures, or infectious disease. I would recommend taking her to a vet due to severity of clinical signs and multiple incidents. The vet will need to do some blood work and exam to help narrow down what is causing Sarah her issues.

Poor pup. Muscle twitches in a pet so young can be caused by a toxin ingestion, a metabolic imbalance (i.e. Low calcium), an underlining neurological disorder, or it can just be a sign of pain somewhere in the body. If the muscle twitches are happening for more than a few hours then it is best to take Chevy to you nearest veterinarian for a complete neurological examination so that he receives the appropriate treatment. At the very least they can give him muscle relaxers to help with his symptoms and then any pain medication he may need. I hope your puppy gets well soon. Best wishes and good luck at the vet.

The twitching and the pain is the most concerning. Causes in an older cat: metabolic issues (liver, kidney failure, diabetes), cancer, pancreatitis, foreign body, or it could just be a virus. I've seen cats twitch when their blood pressure and blood sugar is low. It also could be from different electrolyte abnormalities. Good luck!

I would recommend that you get Sophie in to see your veterinarian. A thorough physical exam will help you and your vet determine if there is pain anywhere (arthritis, etc) that may be causing her to slow down. It would also be indicated to run some blood tests on her to see if there are any other medical issues going on that may be causing her symptoms. Pain can sometimes cause twitching or small muscle spasms --especially if they are having back or neck pain. If that's the case your vet may be able to recommend therapeutic laser treatments and/or acupuncture. These methods of treatment along with medications can make a huge difference. I don't have a definitive answer, but certainly if there was moss in the vomit on Tuesday I would be concerned that Thunder had ingested some type of plant that is making him sick at this point. He sounds mildly inappetant - with missing only breakfast - which is a bit worrisome, but it's the muscle twitching that's really bothering me. I would be concerned that he could have ingested a plant that's neurotoxic (i.e. affects the nervous system) and the spasms are caused by that. Hopefully it's not too serious, but the fact that the symptoms started more than 48 hours ago and are not getting better would make me want to get this checked out ASAP. Poisonous plants can can liver damage, and even though the liver will repair itself patients often need supportive care - such as IV fluids - in order to get back to normal. I'd recommend getting him checked today, running some blood work, and considering a brief period of hospitalization to get him back to normal.

Muscles twitches can be caused by weakness or neurological problems affecting long nerves which are supplying legs and peripheral muscles in general. Unfortunately without having a look at her it is really difficult to be able to provide a more specific advice.
