How much trazodone for dog car anxiety and how long does it last?

50 mg is a very typical, commonly-prescribed dose of trazodone for a dog of this size. I actually have a 20 lb dog who takes trazodone for separation anxiety, and this is the same dose that he takes :) As long as your vet has prescribed this dose of trazodone for Snickers, it should be just fine to give it to her as needed for storms.

Cerenia is the best drug for this and has two dose ranges (one for general nausea, and another range which is higher for motion sickness ). Legally I am not allowed to give dosing information about medications without having performed a physical exam on her. I am certain that your vet would be able to tell you if she's at the maximum dose for her weight. Also they can advise on the safety of using other drugs alongside cerenia. You could also consider trying Adaptil which is a pheromone product which can help with anxiety, particularly for travel. It comes as a collar and a spray that would likely help her as well.

The dose range for Trazodone in dogs is very wide. For use as needed, published doses range from 2.2-14 milligrams per kilogram (mg/kg) of body weight per day. Based on her current 20 pound body weight, Luna has been prescribed 10.1 mg/kg, which is a perfectly acceptable dose. There are limited studies of the use in Trazodone in dogs, but it seems to be a very safe medication and anecdotal doses have been safely reported in excess of the published doses mentioned above. Benadryl is generally quite safe for dogs so it's unlikely that this would cause any harm; however, it rarely does much to help with anxiety in my experience. A better option would be to talk to your veterinarian about prescription anti-anxiety medication such as alprazolam or trazodone - these medications are much more effective for anxious pets, and can be used as-needed for car rides or other situations that may cause stress :)

Yes I would start a day before taking him in. Let them know the dose you usually use so they don’t over medicate if he’s relaxed with the lower dose. Yes, trazodone is often given daily to help with anxiety. There are many options however. The most common medication for separation anxiety is Fluoxetine. It's generally my first choice when I'm looking for a daily medication. I recommend to discuss this with your veterinarian. Also, medication by it's self is not likely to work.
