Is 100mg Trazodone safe for my 20lb puppy with separation anxiety?

The dose for a 20lb puppy would be approximately 25mg every 12 hours with a max dose of 50mg. 100mg would be too high of a dose but would likely not cause significant problems. 50 mg is a very typical, commonly-prescribed dose of trazodone for a dog of this size. I actually have a 20 lb dog who takes trazodone for separation anxiety, and this is the same dose that he takes :) As long as your vet has prescribed this dose of trazodone for Snickers, it should be just fine to give it to her as needed for storms.

Yes, trazodone is often given daily to help with anxiety. There are many options however. The most common medication for separation anxiety is Fluoxetine. It's generally my first choice when I'm looking for a daily medication. I recommend to discuss this with your veterinarian. Also, medication by it's self is not likely to work. Thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center with your question. Twenty mg of fluoxetine given once daily to a 47lb dog is within the recommended dose range, so yes it is safe. The trazadone dose is also within the recommended dose range when used in combination with a selective serotonin reuptake inhibitor, which is the classification of fluoxetine. There is n increased risk of developing a disorder called serotonin syndrome when these two drugs are used together, but the lower dose range of trazadone is used when they are given together to try to prevent that. The normal dose range of trazadone is higher than what Hank is currently being given. I hope this helps!

Valium is a relatively safe drug but if it has not been prescribed to your dog I cannot inform you to give it legally. What I can say is that for an 18 pound dog, you could give 4 or 5 milligrams and still be within the proper dosing range assuming no other drugs or bodily conditions exist that would make it contraindicated. Neither Cushing’s or Diabetes would preclude your dog from receiving, and the trazodone given together with the Valium would produce some additional sedation / anti anxiety effects but not enough to cause problems.

Trazadone can be given once or twice daily to dogs. Side effects include increase/decrease in appetite, GI upset (vomiting, diarrhea), sedation, agitation, ataxia (wobbly gait). His past history of pancreatitis is likely not an issue with this medication. If he takes any other medications, consult first with your vet before giving them.
