I gave my dog Tramadol early. Is it safe to give the next dose?

Yes he should be fine. I would recommend just waiting until the morning to give another dose. Trazadone and tramadol can both cause sedation so please monitor for signs of severe sedation. If you notice any vomiting,diarrhea or severe sedation I would recommend taking him to an emergency clinic.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. All of those medications would be ideal to be given as soon as you can rather then waiting until tonight to "try again". If she was due for all three this morning, I would recommend to try again mid-day. Tramadol can be given every 6-8hours to make her comfortable so try to get that into her as soon as you can. Prednisone and clavamox should be given with food or directly after a meal. I would recommend to feed her some lunch and then try to give those meds again after the meal. Maybe with a treat, cheese, pill pocket. If you are able to get either one of those meds into her this afternoon, then skip the evening dose and resume in early morning. The sooner the better.

He should be fine but all animals can have a different reaction to medications so just monitor him closely for the next 4-6 hours. Too much tramadol can cause sedation or agitation, wobbliness, disorientation, vomiting, tremors and possibly seizures. He ingested the very top end of the dosage he could have for his weight. I suspect he will just be very sleepy.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I doubt ChaCha will have any adverse effects because 4 tabs is only slightly higher than the maximum labeled dose for a dog her size. But if she does, you are most likely to see sedation. Less likely you may see dysphoria - dilated pupils, vocalizing (this is NOT pain- it’s basically being “high”), pacing, panting, or other somewhat abnormal behavior. Twice a day usually means every 12 hrs. Since this is a very small amount of tramadol, you can give her the second dose this evening. FIgure out when you get up in the morning, say 7 AM, then give it to her this evening at 7 PM, or if you get up at 9AM, give it to her at 9PM tonight. Tramadol and gabapentin are safe to give together. Tramadol comes in 50 mg tablets. The upper limit of the dosing range for a 78 pound dog is 150 mg. However, I rarely start with the high dose. I usually start with 50 mg every 8 hours and then increase to 100 mg if you feel it’s needed. Best of luck and I hope you find the reason tomorrow! I hope he improves quickly. Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. One 50mg tablet of Tramadol is still within the dose range for his weight. Reggie may be more sleepy and quiet for 8-12hrs but there should not be any more serious side effects.
