My dog ate a toxic plant. Why is he sick with diarrhea, peeing inside, and swollen testicles?

Pet's info: Dog | English Mastiff | Male | 210 lbs

Our male Mastif has had severe bouts of explosive diarea and has been urinated inside several times and he does not have accidents inside. We caught him yesterday eating a nandina plant and now have it blocked but his balls are severally swollen and have puss on them. Please advise

Poor Thor! I would definitely recommend you take him in to your vet as soon as possible. Nandina plants are toxic to dogs and can cause weakness, seizures, incoordination, coma, and even death. He definitely needs to be evaluated for potential toxicity as well as treated for the diarrhea. His urination could be due to a urinary tract infection or something else going on. Based on the picture of his scrotum, it looks like he has a dermatitis, or infection of the skin. This can be very uncomfortable in dogs. For that, he likely needs an antibiotics and an e-collar to keep him from licking the area and making it worse. I'm so sorry Thor is having so many issues. I hope he does well and is back to normal soon!

I see that your dog is unneutered - one condition that can come on suddenly and be extremely painful is called testicular torsion. Basically, one of the testicles becomes twisted inside the scrotal sac, cutting off the blood supply and causing swelling and intense pain. Based on your description, I would be concerned about this possibility and would recommend getting your dog to a vet as soon as possible, since he is in a lot of distress and there is really nothing that can be done at home to help. Other possibilities would include a scrotal or testicular infection, a tumor, or even a scrotal hernia.

Why are my 11-month dog's testicles red, swollen, and painful?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Gino! Is Gino eating and drinking? Is he urinating? Is there anyway you can re-post with pictures? Gino could have a testicular torsion, urethral prolapse (especially if you are seeing blood at his penis), a urinary tract infection or simply a skin infection on his belly or testicles or even fleas. I recommend extruding his penis and looking at the tip, checking his skin for fleas and pustules or red bumps. And if he is having trouble urinating and/or isn't eating he needs to see a Vet. My dog's testicle is swollen and he's acting weird. What should I do?

I would advise that you go ahead and give a dose of the Benedryl and then get him into the vet as soon as possible- tonight with the ER vet is ideal. This could signal an allergic reaction, or a viral/bacterial infection. But I am most worried about something extremely painful such as a testicular torsion (where the testicle twists on itself, cutting of blood flow and causing swelling). If you can’t get to the vet tonight, ice the testicle for 5-10 minutes every 2-64hours to help with pain and swelling. Place a paper towel or thin cloth between the ice pack and his scrotum. Swollen testicle can be due to torsion, allergic reaction or infection. i would recommend having it checked by your vet ASAP, if the swelling is too large you will need to take him to the emergencies if your vet is not open today.

I would take Hammer to the veterinarian as soon as you can. He may have a mass or infection in his testicles, or one may be twisted within the scrotum which is extremely painful. He may need to be neutered if there is a problem.

My unneutered male dog's testicles are red and swollen. Is it serious?

This could be caused by a local inflammation and possibly an infection. Persistent licking and rubbing can worsen the inflammation. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly anti-inflammatory ointment are needed to solve the problem. At home, some zinc oxide ointment/cream (like sudocream) can be apply twice daily. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking (if any).
