How to give dog Torbugesic after extractions: Dosing & food?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Pet Coach. All of those medications would be ideal to be given as soon as you can rather then waiting until tonight to "try again". If she was due for all three this morning, I would recommend to try again mid-day. Tramadol can be given every 6-8hours to make her comfortable so try to get that into her as soon as you can. Prednisone and clavamox should be given with food or directly after a meal. I would recommend to feed her some lunch and then try to give those meds again after the meal. Maybe with a treat, cheese, pill pocket. If you are able to get either one of those meds into her this afternoon, then skip the evening dose and resume in early morning. The sooner the better.

Hello. Thank you for using PetCoach. Gabapentin may be given with or without food so it doesn't matter that she is NPO. If you normally hide the medication in food you would need to give her the medication by placing the pill directly down her throat. If you don't know how to do this here is a video tutorial: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZN5Iil1hCAg So, I would give the Gabapentin tonight but not tomorrow morning as during the surgery the vet will likely give a narcotic (like morphine). It depends what type of pain killers she is taking, as it is every 8 hours i assume it is an opioid which is fine to give even on an empty stomach. antibiotics can also be given on an empty stomach, although not ideal as this can cause nausea. try giving her some boiled chicken, treats or a canned food called a/d from Hills.

If Zia was given a Metacam injection then that lasts for 24 hrs of pain control. But you can safely give this medication after noon the following day in most situations. It’s best to wait until tomorrow and call your vet to see what time the Metacam was given of you want specifics, but she should be fine either way. : ) Also you can typically give 1/2 her regular portion of food the night of the surgery and then regular portions starting the following day. If she didn’t have any extractions then you shouldn’t have to soften the food or anything like that. I hope that Zia does well following her dental cleaning here moving forward! If they told you to give it the next day when you picked him up then they likely meant this morning. Twice a day would be about 12 hours apart. So if you dose at 8 am then 8 pm for the night dose (or 12 hrs apart of your choosing). But, the safest thing to do is to call your vet for clarification as they prescribed the medication. Twice a day usually means every 12 hrs. Since this is a very small amount of tramadol, you can give her the second dose this evening. FIgure out when you get up in the morning, say 7 AM, then give it to her this evening at 7 PM, or if you get up at 9AM, give it to her at 9PM tonight. This medication should only be used under a veterinarian ‘s direct care and it should be prescribed for the pet with clear labeled instructions for its use.
