My dog's tooth is rotten 10 months after cleaning. Is this normal?

Oscar has a significant amount of tartar buildup on his tooth. His other teeth are likely in similar condition. Ideally, he should be examined by your veterinarian then have a complete dental cleaning. Dental x-rays should be done to have a look below the gum line. A dentistry requires general anesthesia, so blood work may be recommended beforehand.

Leela needs her teeth professionally cleaned by a vet. It appears as though she has at least Grade 3 periodontal disease. Thirteen years old for a small breed dog is not old. Your vet will do some blood testing before the procedure to make sure her organs can process the anesthesia appropriately. The anesthetics used in animals are just like the ones used for people - they are very safe. If you are worried about the anesthetic procedure I suggest you discuss your concerns with your vet so they can walk you through the procedure. Nothing you can do at home will help these teeth. Dental disease is very serious. Dog can lose their teeth but the biggest danger is that they face a higher risk for other diseases because the bacteria that are responsible for dental disease can enter the bloodstream and infect the heart, kidneys and/or other organs. I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Kohl. Dental disease is very common in our dogs. If Kohl had 2 teeth fall out and needed 3 teeth extracted at his dental last year, then he likely had fairly significant dental disease. Often, we try to save as many teeth as we can when we perform a dental, but if they are too diseased, then our efforts may be futile. A tooth becomes discolored when its blood supply is interrupted. If Kohl frequently uses his front teeth to pull on things, this could be due to trauma. Once a tooth is discolored, it is considered "dead" and should be removed to prevent infection. Unfortunately, I would recommend that Kohl have another dental performed. If your vet did not do x-rays of his mouth, he should have that done and have any teeth extracted that have abnormal bone on x-rays. If your vet does not have dental x-ray, you can go to a veterinary dentist. I see some swelling of his gums around those moles and a fair amount of plaque. Daily brushing will not correct this. He does need to see a vet for a dental cleaning, polishing, and scaling. Bella is a cutie! It's unusual for the breath to already be smelling bad so soon after a dental. I recommend to have her examined by her vet to make sure the extraction sites are healed normally. Always better to be safe than sorry! If everything checks out normally, start brushing her teeth daily. Use a dog toothpaste. This will help to decrease the bacterial load in the mouth which is often responsible for bad smells. It will also improve her over-all dental health! Thank you for submitting your question regarding Dusty. Gingivitis and an infection under the gumline can recur as quickly as 14 days after having the teeth professionally cleaned under surgery. To combat this problem, he will need at home care. Some cats will allow you to brush the teeth. Others simply will not tolerate it. There are dental treats that are available. There is also a dental gel called Maxi-guard that works very well. I hope this give you some options to help with his breath. Great job being attentive to his oral health! Your dog is missing some of the upper incisor teeth. They probably fell out either due to trauma or infection; infection is most likely. There is nothing you can do for that now. But you can make sure the rest of her teeth stay healthy so she doesn't lose any more teeth.
