Why is my dog's tongue unusually hot? Should I be worried?

Max is licking your face because he loves you! He's showing affection. His tongue feels hot because a dog's body temperature is naturally higher than a human's. A human body temperature is typically 98.5F, which a dog's is between 101-102.5F.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Nose and tongue temperature is not a test for a fever. I would recommend taking his temperature rectally to check for a fever. Normal dog temperature is 100-102.5. If he has a fever, I would take him to a vet to determine why. If he doesn’t, you can offer him ice cubes or soft rubber toys for the teething. If your dog had been exercising or out in the heat it is possible his temperature could have increased due to this, but 104.1 is a pretty high temperature if you feel it was truly an accurate reading. We can see dogs temperatures get that high if they are really hot/excited/stressed and they are overweight or brachycephalic (smoosh faced) but I am concerned that his energy level was decreased. If he still doesn't seem himself tomorrow then I would bring him in for an exam. If overnight his temperature gets very high again, or he becomes weak, has trouble breathing, or his gums become pale in color or he starts having other symptoms like vomiting and diarrhea then I would consider bringing him in to the emergency vet.

Hi. This is hard to say. But you can determine if he has a fever by checking it with a digital thermometer rectally, then discard the thermometer. Normal temp is 99-102.5. At rest. Get him checked out if he has a true fever. Good luck

The temperature of a dog's nose is not really a good indicator of health. If he is behaving well, eating , and playful then everything is probably fine. If you are worried that he could have a fever, then you could measure his body temperature with a rectal thermometer. The normal temperature of a dog is 100 - 102.5 degrees Fahrenheit.

It's a little difficult to fully assess Masha's tongue color in the first picture due to the lighting, but in the second picture it looks very normal. As long as Masha is behaving normally otherwise I would not be concerned. If she starts having difficulty breathing, her tongue becomes blue in color, develops a cough, or any other abnormal signs I would have her examined by a veterinarian right away.
