What is this sore, crusty lump on my dog's toe and how can I treat it?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. There is no way of knowing what it is just based on its appearance. Common tumors in this region include melanomas, squamous cell carcinomas, mast cell tumors and soft tissue sarcomas, among others. This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. A growth like Spike has on his toe could be related to infection, a benign mass like a cyst, but unfortunately it could also be a cancerous growth. It would be best to schedule a visit to your veterinarian so that he or she can obtain a small needle aspirate sample from the growth and decide if it is cancerous. A lot of growths on the toes can be cured if removed surgically. I hope for the best outcome for Spike!

I hate to hear this is happening to your pup! I recommend to have her examined by the veterinarian. Skin masses can be many things but red raised masses are especially concerning for a skin cancer called a Mast Cell tumor. Your veterinarian will need to collect a sample of cell to examine under the microscope to determine what this is and if further treatment is needed. another common reason for a lesion like this is a foreign object trapped under the skin. Fox tails have a tendency to do this and generally need to be removed and the lesion lanced. Have this checked out soon. Protect the area from licking by having Dog wear an elizabethan collar at all times. I hope this helps.

Hello, that lump looks like it could be a benign mass that is arising from the hair follicles. These masses could be difficult to manage due to their location and difficulty to remove. Unfortunately some times these masses can only be removed through amputation of the toe, but this can only be determine after a physical exam. This mass should be first sampled to determine if it is benign vs malignant. If benign, then ideally you could continue to monitor it at home for any pain and discomfort. As long as this is not bothering Shelby too much and it is benign then you don't have to remove it. If it is malignant, or if it is bothering Shelby, then you can talk about the possibilities of removing the mass with your veterinarian. Hope this helps and best of luck.

Ouch! With any new growth like this, it's best to have your vet take a look in person, as it isn't really possible to determine what is causing the growth just from a photo. Your vet can take a sample of the growth as needed with a fine-needle aspirate, or biopsy, to check what cell type is present and if the spot needs further attention. Other causes can be calluses from rubbing, scabbing from a wound or infection under the skin, or other issues. Until you can get to the vet, it's best to keep the area clean and dry and prevent Ginger from licking or chewing at it with an Elizabethan (cone) collar or sock over the spot. Monitoring it for any additional changes such as size, oozing debris, pain, etc, is also a good idea as these observations can help your vet narrow down the cause and best treatment plan.

That looks like an infection. It could be bacterial, mites, allergies, a foreign body in the skin or yeast infection. At home you can wash it daily with an antibacterial soap (rinse it well). Make sure he is not licking or scratching it (use an elizabethan collar if needed). If it is not getting better or if it is getting worse within a week, then take him into the vet for an exam. Unfortunately, I can't say that I like the looks of that. Masses like these associated with the nail bed can often be problematic in both structure and physiology. structurally, they can grow larger and start to make it difficult for Lily to walk normally without pain. Physiologically, there are types of toes masses that malignant, both locally and systemically, and others that are benign. The first thing I'd do if you are interested in doing a work up, would be to request your vet obtain a biopsy or cytology of the lesion to assess what it is. Depending on the result and how fast they believe the lesion will grow, your vet can make appropriate suggestions. In the majority of toe masses that have any potential at all for spread, typically the toe (or toes) are amputated. Dogs get along fine and usually don't miss a step, even in older pups like Lily.
