My dog has thunderstorm anxiety. OTC meds or vet visit for help?

Pet's info: Dog | Miniature Schnauzer | Male | neutered | 25 lbs

My miniature schnauzer has been having a terrible time dealing with thunderstorms and I'm thinking of some anti anxiety medication for him to help. Any recommendations for over the counter meds that are safe for him or should I wait for a visit to the vet?

You can always try over the counter remedies for anxiety before resorting to drugs. That being said, I have rarely seen these "natural" products work on dogs especially ones that have severe anxieties.

Here are some things you can try:

1. Thundershirt:

If those do not help, I would suggest you speak to your vet about a prescription of Trazodone. I think it is the best anti-anxiety medication without many side effects and it doesn't make them too groggy or "out of it".

There are medications you can get from your vet that help dogs with anxiety due to travel. Unfortunately there are no OTC medications you can give them. You can also get them thunder shirts, which have been reported to help dogs with travel anxiety. Without knowing exactly what type of travel they will be doing (i.e. plane, car), I can't give more specific advice, but I would call your vet today to discuss the use of medications for your dogs, and you can order thunder shirts online. I'm sorry to hear of your concerns with Rosie. It's terrible to have your pet be so scared. I would recommend asking your veterinarian about using an anti-anxiety medication and/or sedative prior to thunderstorms to help reduce Rosie's anxiety. Medications such as trazodone and Sileo can be quite beneficial in these cases. It may also be worth working with an experienced animal behaviorist to work on counter conditioning Rosie's response to thunderstorms. This can be an involved process, but the benefits can be great in that you may be able to reduce Rosie's anxiety over time by helping to have a more positive association with storms.

My dog has noise anxiety. What medications or supplements help?

There are prescription medications that can help with noise anxiety in dogs, such as Sileo, alprazolam, or trazodone - but you will need to discuss this with your veterinarian, since he/she will have to be the one to prescribe the meds if they feel this would be a good option for Tiger. You could also try a natural calming supplement like Zylkene or Composure, and/or a DAP pheromone collar to help relieve some of his anxiety. These can be ordered online without a prescription, and are generally quite safe to use in any dog.

How to help dogs with severe fireworks anxiety during holidays?

Yes there are some over the counter products you can try such as the thunder shirt or an Adaptil collar or diffuser. However if you want something that will work without fail I would try Alprazolam or Valium but these require a prescription through your vet so schedule an appt soon.
