My dog threw up yellow. Is his buttermilk diet making him sick?

I'm sorry Butters isn't doing well! Unfortunately your post was cut off, but I'm assuming you meant to say that she is fully vaccinated? If the dog she was around was fully vaccinated and she is fully vaccinated, then it would be very rare for her to get parvo. I will give you a home remedy to try to see if it helps her vomiting, which could be caused by a GI illness, eating something rotten, a foreign body, or pancreatitis. It could even be related to her normal food Blue Buffalo. Many of my colleagues have seen GI problems in dogs who are fed BB, and it's is not a well regarded food in the veterinary community. It's not a food I would ever recommend for many reasons, include the high incidence of GI issues including hemorrhagic gastroenteritis, as well as zero quality control (they don't own their own factories), and the fact they have openly admitted they have lied about their ingredients. If you were interested in switching food, brands I recommend include Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, and Iams. Dogs actually do need grains in their diet, and many studies have shown the grain free food is fad. Anyway, the home remedy I'm going to give you a home remedy that includes withholding food and feeding only a bland diet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. It could be due to the new food. I can give you a home remedy for Chance to se if that helps. If your pet has vomited this much in the past 45 minutes I would be very suspicious of a foreign body or a very intense dietary indiscretion (eating something he shouldn't have). I would recommend you start supportive care (like Famotiidne 05-1.0mg/kg every 12 hrs and a bland diet like Purina EN Gastrointestinal canned food OR boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese. However there is a big possibility that this could have been a toxicity and if any more symptoms start to arise (such as ataxia (staggering) or shaking, crying out) then I highly recommend you seek a personal veterinarian for a physical examination and further diagnostics. - Dr. H

Poor Milo! If he is otherwise acting normal then you could withhold food for the day and see if the vomiting resolves. If so, then you could try a small amount of a bland diet, boiled chicken and white rice, this afternoon. Continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and the gradually transition back to his regular food. If the vomiting continues and/or he becomes lethargic then he needs to be examined by a vet for treatment. Your vet can take an x-ray, if needed, and then prescribe medications to help control the vomiting and make him feel better.

Vomiting is sometimes seen with conditions such as inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis and chronic kidney disease, among many other conditions. Given Mugsy's young age and the fact that he is otherwise doing fine and this is sporadic, dietary indiscretion appears more likely. It may be something as easy as just changing his diet to something that he can tolerate better. However, an examination by a veterinarian as well as minimal diagnostic data would be needed to rule out more concerning things. You can start by changing his diet to a sensitive stomach type diet. If no improvement, have him examined by a veterinarian to start therapy if needed based on findings. Good luck!

Poor Gulliver! He could have an upset stomach from too many treats. If he is otherwise acting fine, you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice and see how he does with that. If the vomiting continues or he becomes lethargic then he needs to be seen by your vet for treatment. Hope he feels better soon!

I would recommend changing the diet and considering adding a probiotic to the diet such as Purina Fortiflora. In a recent study, it was shown that almost 55% of GI cases (vomiting / diarrhea ) were related to the diet or the intestinal bacterial content being low. I would consider switching to a different diet and wait at least 4 weeks to see a difference. The probiotic can be found online or at your local pet store. If there is no improvement on the new diet, you may need to do a food trial on a hydrolyzed protein diet to rule out a dietary allergy. If the diet has been ruled out as the cause, I would recommend running Kobe's bloodwork and considering an abdominal ultrasound or x-rays. I hope this helps!
