Dog threw up tampon/pad and is fine. Does he still need a vet?

Yes, if your puppy has been vomiting after eating abnormal material, she should absolutely be seen by a veterinarian. Pads can potentially cause obstruction of her stomach or intestines. She should be evaluated and have radiographs performed to rule out an obstruction of her gastrointestinal tract, ASAP.

Hello there! Tampons absorb fluid, so when ingested, they can swell in the intestines and cause a blockage that requires surgery. This could affect any size dog, but as Hershey is a large breed, she has a better chance of being able to pass the tampon without needing surgery. This is good news! The signs of her having an intestinal obstruction that requires medical or surgical attention would be: Not interested in food, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargic, being reclusive (like laying in a corner by herself) I am not alarmed that she has vomited once, but keep an eye on her. If she starts to show other signs that I mentioned, take her into her vet. They will recommend x-rays to check for a blockage in the intestinal tract and bloodwork to check for infections and anemia that can result from a blockage. Then they will either recommend medical intervention, which may include fluids, antibiotics, a high fiber diet, and enemas, or surgical intervention, which may include cutting the intestine to remove the tampon or having to remove a piece of intestine if there is tissue damage. Again, this is worst case scenario. As she is still eating well, defecating normally, and behaving normally, I think home monitoring is absolutely fine for now considering she is such a large dog. Next time she vomits, try to remove it from her before she can eat it again- I realize this is easier said than done. :) I hope this is helpful! Oh good. If he is not showing any signs of pain after 24 hrs has elapsed, then chances are he is fine. Continue to monitor Sam for signs of an intestinal obstruction (excessive vomiting- even water, severe abdominal pain; lack of appetite and vomiting) for an additional 24 hrs just to be certain that he's ok. Most symptoms however develop within the 1st 24 hrs, so so far so good. : )

Oh no! Dogs can be really gross sometimes, but trust me when I say Bam-Bam is not the only dog to eat a tampon. It's great that he pooped it out, which means it isn't stuck. It's also a good sign that he is eating, drinking, and acting ok. He may not have pooped today because he was throwing up the day before and likely not eating, so there was no food in his stomach to digest and make into feces. I would monitor him for now, and give him a tablespoon of canned pumpkin puree (not pumpkin pie puree) with his food to give him more fiber in his diet and encourage him to poop. If he has not pooped in another 24-48 hours, I would be concerned that he may have eaten another tampon you didn't know about and it's stuck, or that he has constipation. I would take him to a vet at that point for a check, he may need a laxative or enema to help him poop, or x-rays to see if there is another tampon still in his system.

This should pass. He obviously likes the feel of chewing on the pads. However you really need to lock the pads away so he cannot access them as they can cause an obstruction when ingested. Monitor KD for diarrhea and vomiting/retching during the next week and should this occur, take him to a veterinarian to check for an intestinal obstruction. I doubt he will get one from such a small piece, however you never know.

I am very sorry Leo has eaten something he shouldn’t have. Though it seems that he might have passed the condom, the fact that he is still vomiting is concerning. It means there could be a potential complication related to its ingestion, such as a blockage in his intestine which is a medical Emergency. I would advise taking him to see a veterinarian immediately for evaluation and treatment. The vet will perform a physical examination and may need to take x-rays to visualise his digestive tract. Oh no, that was naughty of Theo! Feminine pads are dangerous in that they are meant to absorb liquid, and thus expand when in contact with fluids. This pad can expand in his stomach due to liquids in it, and then cause a blockage in his GI tract. If he does end up with a blockage in his GI tract, he would need surgery to remove it. It would be best to take him into an ER now where he can be safely induced to vomit with a shot to get the pad out and prevent an blockage from occurring. I would take him in immediately, as vomiting has to be induced within two hours after ingestion. Good luck, I hope everything turns out ok with Theo!
