What should a thorough veterinary exam for my dog really cover?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 11 months old | 60 lbs

Hello I recently went to the vet for my dog and I was charged for rabies shot, heart worm test, dhppc I think that's what that is. I was also charged for an exam now what I want to know is what exactly is an exam? Cause my dog just got he's shots and weight as well as the dr listening to he's heart , but isn't there supposed to be more with an exam like paws coat teeth etc?

An exam or office visit usually consist of looking at the dog. This includes checking the teeth and mouth and assessing the lymph nodes. It will include checking the ears for any mites or signs of an infection. They do listen to the heart and lungs and feel the abdomen and skin for any bumps or growths. Most vets are good at incorporating this process into vaccinations
