Typically this is just a general health exam which ranges based on region anywhere from $45-$70 for mama pet and if you need the puppies examined as well this is an additional exam per puppy. Most places will also offer multiple pet exam discounts, especially for newborns. You can easily get an estimate for an exam from the veterinary hospital you have in mind by giving them a call and inquiring how much an exam costs. As long as your pet doesn't need any additional medications or treatment then this should be the extent of costs expected. Most places will also give an estimate if medications or anything are needed in addition to the exam.

It is definitely preferable to have records from a previous vet, especially if there are any ongoing medical conditions. Most vaccines are given once per year, so proof isn’t necessary unless it has been less than a year. Exams and vaccines vary in cost depending on your area. Each exam will be slightly tailored to the purpose of that day's visit, and sometimes I will slightly modify an exam based on what has or has not been recently checked. Furthermore, your vet is probably doing much of the exam while you're talking. I'm sure when I do my appointments, it may often look like I'm simply petting the dog - when I am feeling lymph nodes, palpating abdomen, looking at eyes/ears/teeth, etc. So, of course I wasn't there and cannot speak for your vets, but I would suspect that there was more of an exam happening than was perhaps made clear! In a perfect world, every visit would involve checking every body system in every way possible. But, with time limitations and specific concerns that may need to be discussed, some visits will likely involve going more into depth with one body system or another. Hope this helps!
