My dog has a thin fur patch on his side, but it's not itchy or red.

Without examining Poseidon, it's difficult to identify the cause of his hair loss. Certainly mange is a possible cause of hair loss, but ringworm, endocrine/metabolic diseases, fleas, and skin infections can also cause similar signs. A skin scrape is needed to check for the presence of the mites that can cause mange. Changes in nail colors can be normal, but in some rare cases can indicate some nutritional deficiencies. Make sure Poseidon is fed a balanced commercial dog food so that he is receiving all appropriate vitamins and minerals. Ribs should be felt with a thin fat covering in dogs of a normal body weight, but should not be seen prominently. Your vet should be able to tell you if Poseidon's weight is appropriate at his next exam.

Poor Poseidon! It's probably not related to heat rash. It sounds like Poseidon probably has an allergy causing itching and possibly secondary bacterial skin infection. Allergies can be related to food or environmental allergens. It is also possible that he has mites, fleas, or ringworm. You should make sure Poseidon is on a quality flea preventative like Frontline Plus, Bravecto, Nexguard, or Advantix. You can try bathing Poseidon in a gentle oatmeal shampoo or Douxo Calm shampoo to see if this helps. If Poseidon is very incomfortable he will likely have to be examined by a veterinarian. Skin samples can be obtained to make sure he doesn't have an infection and medication can be used to help with itching. Newer medications like Cytopoint tend to be very effective for dogs with allergies. She could have an endocrine disease like low thyroid causing her hair loss, or even though she doesn't seem itchy it's also possible that she has an allergy or external parasite. There are some autoimmune diseases that can cause thinning hair as well although usually you would also see skin changes. Your mum should make an appointment with her vet to have Adele's skin examined.

Thinning hair in a young dog like Pocholo may be due to environment allergies, seasonal changes, nutritional deficiencies (namely vitamins and minerals) or less commonly for a young dog, an endocrine condition like Cushing's disease. I would assess Pocholo's diet carefully, make sure that he isn't being exposed to anything out of the ordinary, and if not, consider having him looked at by your vet for any other problems. The causes can be differentiated by the clinical signs associated with it and the physical exam findings. If Wally is only showing some hair loss without scratching or overgrooming then it could conditions such as alopecia areata that can affect dogs and usually resolves on its own. If there is evidence of scratching and you start noticing some redness or irritation associated with it, then other conditions such as allergies are possible. If you notice him overgrooming himself in that area then it could be something like psychogenic alopecia which is more of a behavioral issue. I think that since he is not having overt clinical signs and it is mostly hair loss, I think it is possibly transient and could resolve on its own. You can monitor this closely and if it does not resolve or it worsens then have him examined by your veterinarian. Good luck!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to allergies. A secondary infection is likely and also needs to be addressed. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

If the hair thinning seems to be on the tail and the rest of his body and he is not itching, licking, or scratching the hair loss, then it may be due to an underlying endocrine disease such as Cushing's disease, diabetes, or hypothyroidism (low thyroid hormone). I would recommend Hugo see his veterinarian soon for this. Your veterinarian will do a physical exam and may recommend blood work to check for any underlying health conditions such as the ones mentioned above among others to help determine a cause so he can get treated most appropriately.
