My dog is very thin, drinking a lot, and not eating. What's wrong?

Poor guy. Depending on his age, he could have intestinal parasites, kidney disease, diabetes, or even cancer causing his symptoms. It is very difficult to tell without having a vet nearby to run some diagnostic tests on your pet Beruang. You can certainly start with a broad spectrum dewormer on him, but beyond that you will need to get into contact with any nearby vet to have him looked at. Hello. So sorry to hear that Browny is not feeling well. He definitely needs to be seen by a vet for an exam and bloodwork. It sounds like he could have diabetes or kidney disease as he is showing some of the symptoms. Of course he could have any number of other things going on but those are very common and can be easily diagnosed with bloodwork. That would be the place to start. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Without knowing Gunnars full history and tests that have been performed it is difficult to say what is going on. I would recommend starting for scratch even if you have already had labs done. I would have a complete blood panel and chemistry panel with thyroid testing preformed. I would test for heartworm disease and tick born diseases. I would also recheck a urine sample and check a blood pressure. Things can change over 2 months so while there may not have been abnormal results then, there may be now. There are many diseases that cause the signs you are seeing so without new labs there is no way you can rule them out for sure. If everything is still normal I would have an abdominal ultrasound done to see what’s going on inside his abdomen. Good luck and kisses to Gunnar!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Dogs that are not eating and drinking and look very thin and suddenly very thin are very sick. The biggest concern would be a 'foreign body'- a sock/underwear/toy that is stuck in the gut, preventing any food from being taken in and absorbed. Other concerns would be severe gastritis, a high worm burden (parasite infection), cancer in the gut, lack of enzyme production in the pancrease, and some other causes. I recommend getting your girl to a vet right away however, as it sounds like she is very sick. Best of luck with her!

BUN and CREA are severely elevated and the cause of it should be ideally understood by performing a urine analysis (and specifically a urine specific gravity to rule out kidney failure). Mild anemia (lower RBCs) can be present during kidney failure. Amylase is another important value as severe elevation could be compatible with pancreatitis, which can cause the signs you are describing. CPLI test can be performed as well to rule out pancreatitis. Please discuss all the options with your local vet.

She really needs to see a vet. I wish I could tell you something to do at home but that is not possible without knowing why she is showing those symptoms. Not only that, but those symptoms are very non-specific and could be from almost any disease process or illness that can affect a dog. Some examples would be: diabetes, thyroid disease, kidney disease, liver disease, Cushing's disease, parasites,....just to name a few. This sounds more like your dog has a chronic gastro-intestinal problem such as food intolerance, gastritis, chronic or acute pancreatitis, food indiscretion, or even a tumor, liver disease. He also may have a chrionic infection somewhere, e.g. in his prostate, which could be the cause of the blood in his urine, or kidney disease. The signs are too unspecific to pinpoint a cause, so you need to take Potato to your vet for an exam and blood work, and possibly xrays. Please make an appointment right away.
