Why are my 1-year-old dog's teeth stained despite regular brushing?

Yes, it can be normal. It is suggested that you start brushing the teeth. At this point it may not remove that staining but it will prevent more from accumulating. Good on you for brushing Cleo's teeth a couple of times a week! That is really awesome. Brushing the teeth is great, but there can still be tartar build up over time. Cleo could have also injured her tooth biting in something hard. I would have her seen by a vet for this tooth problem. She may benefit from a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing, and the vet can examine the tooth to determine why it is brown and how best to treat it. I would have her seen by a vet this week.

This looks like dental staining. She does have gingivitis and dental plaque so I recommend a dental cleaning. When the teeth are scaled and polished the stained area may disappear. Also when they are working on her teeth they can check this area more closely to see if any additional treatment would be recommended. Silly girl, toothpaste isn't a treat! It can be very difficult to train a dog to allow their teeth to be brushed. I would venture to guess that the majority of vets don't brush their pet's teeth, either! The brown staining is plaque and tartar. Once the plaque sets in, there is no amount of brushing that will remove it. The only way to remove the plaque and thoroughly clean the teeth is to take Keltie in for a dental cleaning. This can be a scary idea since she will need to be under general anesthesia, but it can help her avoid many preventable diseases in the future, such as abscessed teeth, infection of the jaw bones, and shedding bacteria in the bloodstream that could cause infection of the heart valves. Thank you for posting pictures. (I know that is always a challenge with a puppy!) From the pictures, the brown area just appears to be particulate build up on the tooth. That particular tooth has 3 roots, so there is a depression between the roots that things can get stuck in. (One of my dogs always has problems there.) I would recommend using an infant toothbrush and pet toothpaste (my favorite is PetSmile (http://store.petsmileusa.com)) to brush her teeth and continue daily. I hope that was helpful! What I see in your pictures looks like tartar buildup. It happens more frequently in smaller breeds and is sometimes associated with feeding wet food. Getting her teeth cleaned by your vet will remove the tartar (you can't clean it off by yourself, it's adhered firmly to the teeth) and ensure she remains healthy for longer. Tartar buildup will trap more material, irritate the gums, breed bacteria, leading to foul breath, gum and even heart disease, as the irritated gum allow the bacteria to get into the bloodstream more easily. I recommend getting her in to see your vet for an exam and bloodwork to see how well she'll tolerate anesthesia. She will have to be anesthetized for the procedure. Trust me, this is in everyone's best interests. It greatly reduces the stress for your dog and keeps the veterinary staff from getting bitten by a frightened dog. They will remove the tartar with a scaler, polish the teeth to make it more difficult for new tartar to adhere and most likely recommend some treatments you can do at home to help slow the rate at which tartar collects on her teeth in the future.

Brushing is recommend at least once per day so I suggest you increase to brushing once per day. Sometimes dogs get some dental staining that you cannot remove. I think his teeth look great from this photo. Dogs will never have no tartar at all; you can expect some will always be present.
