My dog had teeth removed. Can I stop her pain meds if she's happy?

The loxicam is an anti-inflammatory medication. While it helps with pain it also helps swelling around the extraction areas and promotes healing that way. The antibiotics prevent infection but do not have any effect on inflammation from the procedure. As Bella is doing well so far I would recommend giving the loxicam to help healing. However if she has any issues afterwards such as vomiting, diarrhea and/or decreased appetite stop this medication as rarely it can have adverse effects on the liver/kidneys.

What a sweet face! You do not need to stop giving either of the medications. Both are safe for him to receive right up to the day of surgery. Hold off on giving the them the morning of surgery unless your vet instructed otherwise. Its ok for him to only have had one small bowel movement in the past 24 hours. Absolutely the pain could be causing him to lay around. They are very painful. I would wet the canned food down even more so he doesn't have to chew much. He is going to need some pain medicine from your veterinarian. They are going to need to pull that tooth to stop the pain. Poor Rex.

Hi. Just as in humans, yes dental problems can be very painful. There aren't any ways with that much damage you can help at home, other then softening the food to help her eat. There are no safe human or over the counter pain medications unless directed by your veterinarian. A veterinarian would perform a full exam, recommend a dental under anesthesia and clean the teeth. While cleaning, they also check for loose teeth, bone loss, pockets, abscesses, x-rays, etc. to determine which teeth should be extracted for the patients health and comfort. Warning signs of dental disease are redness of gums, loose teeth, bad breath, pain, decreased appetite, chewing differently, and guarded of mouth. You'll need to watch his appetite, pain level, and quality of life.

It could be that Chlie is in pain from the tooth extraction, but unfortunately there are no safe OTC human pain medications you can give. Many of them are toxic to dogs and can be fatal if given. I would give your vet a call right away to get some pain medications for her. If you can't reach your vet, I would take her into a pet ER to be seen.

I am very happy you were able to take Maxie to the vet today. Once the abscess is removed and the tooth she will feel much much better. The tooth hurts, and when it is removed most of the pain will be gone and tomorrow she will hardly have any pain left. She will be able to chew and eat without any problem at all. You can soak her kibble in water for a few days to make it soft to help with chewing. But overall she should be fine.
