Is it normal for a 7-year-old Cavalier to need many teeth extracted?

It isn't normal for a pet to loose teeth, but it is expected to happen if you aren't keeping up with your pets oral hygiene. Pets should have their teeth brushed by their owners at least 2-3 times a week, and sometimes even daily or dental disease will ensue, leading to unstable periondontal bone, friable gums and subsequent instability of the teeth. I would recommend doing your best to keep up with Lottie's dental care by getting a dog friendly toothbrushing kit and starting to brush her teeth often. Then getting her teeth regularly cleaned annually by your vet should be next on your list of important things to do to keep up with her oral hygiene. You will notice a significant improvement in the quality of her teeth if you take these necessary steps and she will thank you for it because this will significantly reduce her chances of losing additional teeth in the future. The staining on the hairs near his eyes is normal for his breed. It is due to tears coming from his eyes. As long as the whites of the eyes are not red and he isn't squinting, then it is just a cosmetic problem. To recieve a health certificate for travel, he will need to see a veterinarian approved by the USDA for a physical exam. If he is deemed healthy, then the health certificate will be written. Hi. I'm sorry for Bella's mouth troubles. Unfortunately Yorkies tend to be predisposed to dental disease. If Bella's remaining teeth are loose or diseased, they should be extracted by your vet. She will feel so much better! My sister in law adopted a little yorkie that I rescue who needed all of his teeth removed due to periodontal disease once he was first found. He eats like a champ and gained weight after his teeth were extracted because he could finally eat without pain. Some dogs may reguire canned or soft food after a full mouth extraction but some still prefer their hard kibble (small bites) Once she is healed from the extractions, usually there is no further oral disease, though her mouth should still be checked at her annual veterinary visits. If you are planning on having Samuel neutered your vet may recommend having any remaining baby teeth extracted at that time. If not, your vet will likely want to remove them at the time of Samuel’s first yearly dental cleaning, as retained baby teeth can lead to increased gum and dental disease. It is a good idea to start brushing his teeth daily with an enzymatic pet toothpaste to help prevent /reduce gum disease. Small breed or toy dogs are prone to retained teeth and dental disease and should be treated with daily tooth brushing at home and at least yearly dental cleanings at the vet to help prevent pain from dental disease.

I'm sorry that you are dealing with this with Kohl. Dental disease is very common in our dogs. If Kohl had 2 teeth fall out and needed 3 teeth extracted at his dental last year, then he likely had fairly significant dental disease. Often, we try to save as many teeth as we can when we perform a dental, but if they are too diseased, then our efforts may be futile. A tooth becomes discolored when its blood supply is interrupted. If Kohl frequently uses his front teeth to pull on things, this could be due to trauma. Once a tooth is discolored, it is considered "dead" and should be removed to prevent infection. Unfortunately, I would recommend that Kohl have another dental performed. If your vet did not do x-rays of his mouth, he should have that done and have any teeth extracted that have abnormal bone on x-rays. If your vet does not have dental x-ray, you can go to a veterinary dentist. Bella is a cutie! It's unusual for the breath to already be smelling bad so soon after a dental. I recommend to have her examined by her vet to make sure the extraction sites are healed normally. Always better to be safe than sorry! If everything checks out normally, start brushing her teeth daily. Use a dog toothpaste. This will help to decrease the bacterial load in the mouth which is often responsible for bad smells. It will also improve her over-all dental health! Dental cleanings are very important as bacteria in the mouth can lead to many other problems in the body. At 12 years of age, Burt is not too old to have a dental cleaning and being a Dachshund, I would certainly recommend having his teeth cleaned before there are any problems. If you keep up with preventative cleanings, Burt will be under anesthesia less time since there will be less tartar buildup. If you wait and do not have any cleanings done, the dental disease worsens and he may require more extractions leading to more time under anesthesia. It is more beneficial and safer to have him in for multiple preventative dental cleanings to avoid being under anesthesia for long periods of time. My dachshund, when he was still alive, had dental cleanings up until he was 17 years old. He lived to be 20 years old but he was on oral antibiotics for dental disease for the last 3 years and was unable to undergo dental cleanings due to other diseases he was dealing with.
