My dog's teeth look abnormal. Could it be gingivitis or other issues?

Both teeth look normal. The gums above the tooth are pigmented in the second picture, which can be normal. (like a freckle inside the mouth). Rocko has signs of wear on all his incisors. This could be due to chewing on kennel walls or fencing or it could be due to misalignment of the teeth. These teeth may need to be removed at some point. I recommend to have Rocko examined by a veterinarian to examine the teeth., This will give you a better idea of if there is any pain or other signs of dental disease indicating that they should be removed sooner. Stop him from chewing on crates/fencing as well if that is occurring. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

Thank you for providing a picture of Shad's teeth! It looks like he has some tartar build up on that canine tooth, and I see his gums along his teeth are red. This is a sign of gingivitis. It looks like it's time for a dental cleaning, scaling, and polishing. I would give his vet a call on Monday to set up an appointment to have this done within the next week or two. What you are describing is an underbite. It is hard to tell from the photos but it also looks like his jaw is not in alignment. That may just be the angle or the quality of the photo. Without examining myself I can't really say. Unless you want to spend a lot of money at a veterinary dental specialist trying to have this "fixed" I don't see the reason to do anything about it. I don't even know if you have dental specialists in Zim so you would likely have to bring him to South Africa. Really, this is a cosmetic problem and likely will not cause him any problems in the future. There is nothing you can do for this at home to rectify it. I personally would not be concerned if this was my dog so I have to agree with your vets. Sorry, I wish I had a quick fix for you but there is not really anything to be done. Hope this helps. He likes being warm! I wouldn't worry as long as he can walk away from the heater and cool down. That's great news that his tooth is coming in. Be aware that the tooth may not develop normally. You will have to wait and see. It sounds like the missing tooth/abnormal tooth is not affecting his ability to eat or play but abnormal teeth may be a reason not to breed dogs (you would want to check with the breed registry). The canine tooth looks like it might have a little evidence of gingivitis but it can be difficult to tell from a picture. I also would not prescribe antibiotics for dental disease in most situations - if the tooth is infected removing it is the best treatment option. Even though the tooth probably will fall out there may be other diseased teeth since it can be difficult to evaluate the extent of disease without sedation - you may want to ask your vet about a dental cleaning or if your vet does not do this procedure see another vet.

She definitely has some wear on those teeth - often that particular pattern is caused by chewing tennis balls a lot or being really itchy and chewing at the skin a lot. The only way to know if the teeth are healthy is a dental x-ray and exam under anesthesia, so I can't say for sure if it's an issue or not. With a dental x-ray, her vet can look at the tooth roots and also make sure the gingiva is healthy. This is definitely not an emergency, but I would recommend bringing it up at her next appointment.
