Do dogs get tapeworms from eating cockroaches, or only fleas?

Oh no. This is a nuisance to deal with for sure. Tapeworms are contagious to people, but it would require ingesting (eating) a live worm to become infective. As long as you clean up the feces and use good hygiene (washing your hands and avoid putting hands in the mouth after touching your pet or any live worms), then you are less likely to infest yourself. Clean up the poop quickly and don’t let your pet around other dogs or cats to avoid transmission until you can get Coco treated. Best wishes and don’t forget to also get Coco on a good flea preventative (ie Bravecto, Nexgard, Simparica, Vectra etc) at your vet to avoid further infection with tapeworms. Take care.

The reason dogs get tapeworms are from ingestion of fleas. Most dogs in shelters or from a rescue have fleas or are exposed. i would recommend contacting your vet to get medication to get rid of the tapeworms. As long as Angus is flea free and not ingesting them the tapeworms should not return. I would recommend picking up his poop for 2-3 weeks and throwing it away to prevent a high infestation in the yard but again dogs will get tapeworms from the ingestion of fleas. I hope that helps

You are correct. He has what appears to be tapeworms, which is caused by either fleas (most common cause) or ingesting another pets feces that has worms in it. I would notify the friend, get him on a flea preventative if not on one already, and then take him to your friends approved vet who can then treat for the tapeworms. These are usually easily resovled with 1 dose of specific dewormer for tapeworms. THese worms are transmissible (hand-to mouth) to people, so its best to always use good hygiene practices and keep young kids away from the pet until the worms are resolved. The most common tapeworm is flea transmitted like you discuss. There are over the counter medicines and the drug you would want to use is called Praziquantal. It is available under many brand names but that is the drug that we use in the States to treat most tapeworm infections. Good luck with Roxy

It is easy to catch tape worm. Even if your dogs are treated against fleas, there sometimes is a live infected flea hopping on and before it dies, your dog may eat it while grooming and so get infected. It is not a big problem for the dog but rather more for us, since it is gross when the proglottids crawl out. I suggest you worm your other dog as well (you need a wormer that has praziquantel as an ingredient). If the diarrhea does not go away within two days, feed boiled white rice and boiled white boneless chicken meat for a few days, then transition back into their regular food. If the diarrhea does not subside after the bland diet, then you should have your dogs seen by a vet.

Tapeworms can be transmitted from fleas, raw meat /fish or rodents. I recommend you take a sample to be identified by your vet in order to investigate the source. Drontal plus should be effective and should be repeated after one month
