It is unlikely that anything will affect your dog, even though the puncture wound should be ideally checked by your local veterinarian. A check up, appropriate disinfection and possibly antibiotics (oral, topical or in a shampoo formulation) are needed to solve the problem. Disinfection may be started at home with very diluted hibiscrub or betadine or salted water baths. Buster collar may be useful as well to avoid any licking/scratching. You are right that this practice is not sanitary and is definitely not standard. Luckily the risk is not big, but it's possible that the contaminated needle can cause a deep infection. Signs of an infection are redness, swelling and fluid/pus discharge from the area. It's definitely less of a concern since he is on antibiotics, so I wouldn't be too worried. It's best to just monitor the injection site for the next two weeks. If you happen to notice any signs of infection, then it would be best to take him back to the vet for treatment. The only way to know if a dog was infected with rabies is to monitor for signs of rabies. The test for rabies uses brain tissue so it can't be done on an alive animal. There is a 15 day window of time from when an animal can transmit rabies until the animal would be showing clinical signs of rabies and then death. If there is no history of a bite wound on the pet dog than the likelihood of rabies is very low. If you ever see any signs of rabies than have him/her examined by a veterinarian. There are other diseases that can be transmitted to humans, like Ringworm, Salmonellosis, Leptospirosis, Campylobacter infection, Giardia infection, Cryptosporidium infection, Roundworms, Hookworms, etc. If your dog was examined by a vet and appears healthy, vaccinated, as well as treated for common intestinal parasites than it is not likely you will get an infection from him/her, especially if you have a normal immune system. Use a monthly heartworm pill that also contains a dewormer, like Heartgard or Interceptor to decrease the chance of your dog getting intestinal parasites in the future.

Bacterial and parasitic diseases usually require a certain amount be ingested before they cause disease. It would take more than a lick to the outside of the mouth to give a substantial amount. It appears that you have done a good job washing away any potential contaminants and it would be rare for you to have contracted anything. Cat scratches can transmit many infections, the most serious being 'cat scratch disease' from the bartonella bacteria. You should speak to your doctor/physician about your own wounds and although this scratch appears to be minor you should bathe it thoroughly with antiseptic and monitor for any redness, fever, swelling or leg pain

I wouldn’t be too worried at this point. If Oden develops any illness or odd symptoms, I would make sure to mention it to the vet. But since the likelihood of a disease is low, there wouldn’t be any treatment recommended at this time.
