My dog has a swollen gland with pus, no vet. Can I get antibiotics?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 4 years and 11 months old | 38 lbs

My dog has come down with a sudden case of mastitis in one of her glands. She was incredibly lethargic and fevered this morning and after thoroughly checking her I discovered that her glad was swollen and very warm to the touch. When expressed the gland produces a yellowish green pus. I should not that she is intact but not pregnant nor has she ever been. We have expressed the gland completely, but with the holiday no vets in the area are open. Is there some sort of antibiotic I can purchase?

Poor Sookie! If she has mastitis then she will need an oral antibiotic to treat. You can not purchase one without a prescription from a vet who does an examination. You could soak the area in a warm Epsom salt solution and have her examined by a vet as soon as possible. You could try to find an emergency clinic and have her seen tonight, especially if the lethargy becomes worse. Hope she feels better soon!

There is no antibiotic over the counter you can purchase but a warm compress will help with the pain and swelling. Keep her quiet and rested for today and try boiled chicken and rice or syringe feeding her gatorade or pedialyte or chicken broth to keep fluids in her. Often expressing it takes some discomfort away so she might get relief from what you have already done.

Unfortunately you cannot get an oral or injectable antibiotic for her without a veterinary prescription (and this is what she needs). If she is weak/lethargic/vomiting or in severe pain, I would make a trip to the emergency vet. If she seems normal other than the gland, you can alternate warm packing to aid in drainage and putting cold cabbage leaves on the area and continue to express the infected milk as it accumulates. The vet will need to be sure this is truly just a case of mastitis and that we don't have a mammary tumor as well. Also discourage her from licking the area with an e-collar or t-shirt .

Thank you for submitting your question regarding Baby Girl. She absolutely needs veterinary care. Is there a family member or friend who could help you pay? Most hospitals offer financing options such as Care Credit. If these are not options, I would consider relinquishing her and the puppies to rescue group who can provide her care. I do not want to upset you, but her condition is very serious. It can be life threatening if the infection from her mammary gland spreads to her bloodstream. In addition, she is in pain. Do not give any over-the-counter pain medications though as these can be toxic to dogs and puppies. I hope this information helps.

My dog has mastitis. Is it safe to give her penicillin at home?

I would not recommend treating your dog without an examination by the veterinarian, to ensure that mastitis is the issue and to ensure an appropriate antibiotic is chosen. We do not normally use penicillin to treat this infection, a first line antibiotic commonly used is Clavamox.

My dog has swollen neck glands. Should he be on antibiotics or steroids?

Antibiotics and steroids would be a guess of a treatment simply used to cover the possibilities. Enlarged lymph nodes can be a sign of cancer (lymphoma) or an infection. Steroids can interfere with a diagnosis of cancer but also help keep them comfortable for a short while It is best to have the gland aspirated or biopsied. The results can be back in 24-72 hours so you know exactly what you are dealing with. Generally a steroid and antibiotic can be started to cover your basis until you get a definitive answer. If it is cancer, then the antibiotics are pointless and can be stopped. IF it is inflammation or infection, then you are already on antibiotics to help cover you.

My nursing dog has mastitis. What can I do at home to help her?

Poor Crisco! You can try to apply a warm compress to the area to help with the mastitis a few times a day to see if it improves/resolves. Mastitis typically presents as a red, firm, painful mammary gland. I would also recommend taking her temperature rectally. If she has a fever (>102.5) she really should go see your local vet for an evaluation and medication. Many cases of mastitis require antibiotics. Mastitis can also be very painful, so many patients require pain medication as well.
