My dog has mastitis. Is it safe to give her penicillin at home?

The dose of amoxicillin for dogs that is typically recommended is 20 milligrams per kilo of body weight every 12 hours. If you mean "mastitis," I would advise you that amoxicillin is not a great choice for this condition. Mastitis should be treated with more broad spectrum antibiotics, such as Baytril or Clavamox. It's also quite a painful condition, and needs pain medications that are safe to use in nursing bitches. Please consult your veterinarian for a full exam of Caramel as well as prescription of appropriate medications; this is not a condition that can be treated at home.

Unfortunately, no, doxycycline is not a good choice for antibiotics in a nursing mamma dog. First, it does not have the spectrum of antibacterial activity needed for most mammary gland infections. This means that it may not clear up the infection entirely or be effective against the organisms causing the infection at all. Secondly, this is a drug that needs to be avoided in nursing moms because of potential side effects it can have in young puppies. This drug is not safe in neonates and can cause problems with the teeth in these young pups. I would recommend taking your momma dog to the vet to be examined and to get an antibiotic that is safe for her and the pups. The most important aspect of treating an ear infection is applying the appropriate medication (determined based on ear cytology, or looking at a sample of ear discharge on a microscope slide) directly into the ear canal as a topical treatment to the infection. Sometimes, particularly if the eardrum is ruptured, a dog may be put on an oral course of antibiotics and/or antifungals (depending on the type of infection), but penicillin would not be a usual antibiotic choice as it is unlikely to address the more common causes of ear infections. Therefore, injectable penicillin is not a typical component of treating an ear infection. I recommend you have Aerial seen by your primary veterinarian, and they can help guide you on an appropriate treatment of the infection; injectable antibiotics should never be used without the guidance of a veterinarian.

Poor Sookie! If she has mastitis then she will need an oral antibiotic to treat. You can not purchase one without a prescription from a vet who does an examination. You could soak the area in a warm Epsom salt solution and have her examined by a vet as soon as possible.
