My puppy's face swelled from allergies, how to stop her itching?

Poor Pancake! Have her examined first in the morning. It's possible she has an infection or is having an allergic reaction. At home, applying a cool (not cold) compress the the reddened areas may help her to feel more comfortable. Keep her from licking the feet since this may make it worse. You may also apply a dab of coconut oil to the red areas and rub it in well (it may soothe the skin). Your veterinarian will be able to provide medications that will work much better. She will need treatment as well for the underlying cause. I hope she feel better quickly.

The pictures are kind of blurry but I can tell there is some redness. The swelling is difficult to appreciate. It does seem like an allergic reaction to something, but what.....I cannot say. Since she is acting otherwise normally you can try to give her some over the counter antihistamine medication - you can use diphenhydramine (Benadryl). Oh my. Poor girl. Only a very small percentage of dogs actually have a grain allergy. Allergies to beef, chicken, turkey and lamb are more common. I would try to avoid these proteins in her food. Also food alleriges are not as common as environmental alllergies or flea allergies. I have the most success prescribing Apoquel to my patients, because it isn't a steroid and is fast acting (within 24 hrs). OTher choices are Temaril P and Atopica. Pet formulated fish oils (from your local pet store) can also be given in addition to the allergy medication to provide some natural skin anti-inflammatory properties. It sounds like Georgia is having an allergic reaction. You should be giving her the antihistamine every 8 hours and try washing the affected area with an antibacterial hand soap (rinse it well). You can continue to apply to anti-itch cream twice daily (but make sure she is not licking it!), so make her wear an elizabethan collar if you need to. Try this treatment for 3-5 days. If it is not improving or if it is getting worse, then take her in to see her vet. The doctor has stronger medications that are sometimes needed for allergic reactions. I hope this helps!

The likely secondary infections need to to be addressed and the itchiness also need to be addressed to prevent this issue from getting worse. Medications like prednisone can be used for the itchiness and antibiotics for the infections. In the meantime, you can use an e-collar in the meantime to prevent further self-trauma. It really comes down to figuring out what is causing his allergies so that they can be treated or the specific allergen avoided. There are many things that can cause allergies though in most cases they can be broken down into 3 big categories: flea, food and environmental allergies. Allergies are usually worked up in a stepwise fashion starting with flea allergies as this is the easiest and cheapest to take care of. If not on a flea preventative, then it would be a good idea to get started on one. If already on one then it would be a good idea to change to something else (there are many new products out in the market). If not improved in 1-3 months then it is time to move on and check for food allergies by switching to a novel diet (new protein and new carbohydrate). If that does not seem to be the issue then you are left out having to check for environmental allergies which require blood and/or skin tests. Allergies can be very frustrating to deal with at first but so rewarding at the end when we are able to treat them effectively!

Probiotics, antihistamines and an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for pets may help but they may not cure the condition. When you can, have Lily re-examined by the veterinarian. I recommend to conduct a proper food trial with a prescription hydrolyzed protein diet. This is the best and only way to accurately rule out food allergies as the cause of itching.
