My Rottweiler puppy's cheek is swollen and oozing. Is it an abscess?

Pet's info: Dog | Rottweiler | Female | unspayed | 10 months and 28 days old | 56 lbs

Came home to my Rottweiler puppy with the left side of her cheek swollen she had a scab on it prior near where the whiskers are on the side of her face this scab has now turn into a swollen left side of the face that is oozing and when I touch it, it oozes more (should I lightly press in the area and drain it) what is and and how should I treat it..would have attached photos but it would not let me. The inside of her mouth is also fine has not marks or cuts.

Poor Xarina. This sounds like she had an initial puncture wound that has now turned into an abscess. This not only should be drained using sterile procedures through your vet but she will also need to be placed on antibiotics and anti-inflammatory medicaiton. This cannot be managed at home unfortunately. If you cannot get it your vet until morning, then placing a cold compress on the area for 5-10 minutes may help some. I would then allow it to drain on its own because this area is likely very sore and also you have the potential to cause transfer of bacteria into nearby vessels, which can cause sepsis if you don't follow up right away with some type of antibiotic or internal flush (usually under sedation). Letting you vet properly care for this on tomorrow is the best option for Xarina's care. There are many regular vet hospitals open on the weekend, so google search for some in your area. I hope that she is able to make a full and speedy recovery. Best of luck at the vet on tomorrow.

Poor Marina! From your description, it sounds like this may have been an abscess - this is a focal area of swelling that is basically a large pocket of bloody pus. These often rupture, allowing the material inside to drain out and the swelling to go down. It's important to determine what may have caused this, and she will also need antibiotics to treat the infection even though the swelling is improved, so I would recommend taking her to the vet as soon as possible. In the meantime, you can use a warm washcloth to keep the area clean and wipe away any continuing drainage until you are able to see the vet.

My dog's face swelled overnight. What could it be and what to do?

I am suspicious that he has An abscess (infection). In that location it could be from a tooth, or some sort of trauma or migrating foreign object. I would highly encourage you to have him evaluated by a veterinarian soon. This likely needs antibiotics, and possibly surgery as well. In the meantime I would warm compress the area several times a day. This may encourage the abscess to drain which is what we want. Best of luck and I hope he improves soon.

If the swelling is hot and painful to touch, it is probably an abscess. In this case, you should take Angie to your local vets for an appointment today. If the swelling is not bothering your puppy, is soft and is not warm to touch, it could be an allergic reaction. In that case, you can monitor Angie at home for a few hours and apply a cold compress on the face every 1-2 hrs. If it is an allergy, the swelling should go down in the next 5-6 hrs.

My dog's mouth is swollen, he won't eat or drink. What can I do?

Hi there and thank you for using pet coach to address your concern. I would recommend having this examined by a veterinarian. This type of swelling we can see with severe tooth root abscesses. It is likely reksio will need a course of oral antibiotics and an anti inflammatory. I would get this seen sooner rather than later as this type of infection will conti i.e. to grow bigger until the infection is treated and the tooth removed that is causing the problem otherwise, this can rupture through the skin and he will be left with a large wound on the face. This is definitely suspicious of an abscess. I've also seen trauma (hit their face on something hard) cause fluid swelling that looks the same, so hopefully this is the case rather than an abscess. Either way, it's not an emergency and he is safe to wait until morning to see the vet. I hope that helps and Ace gets better soon.
