My dog's butt is swollen after playing outside. What's wrong?

Poor girl! This could be a number of things from a benign tumor, an infection, a cancerous tumor and much more. I would first put a cone collar on her to prevent her from licking it or it will only get worse. Since the bump is really swollen and obviously bothering her, I would have your vet take a look at it. Your vet will be able to determine what it is and recommend the best treatment for her. They will likely put her on antibiotics and may or may not recommend to have it surgically removed. Check and see if he has any scratches or cuts that need to be cleaned. If he does, clean them gently with a clean washcloth and tap water. Do not use hydrogen peroxide as this will be very irritating to the damaged skin and if it gets in his eyes it could cause damage to his cornea. You can use some dilute Betadine (available at any pharmacy-- put some water in a cup and add just enough Betadine so that it looks like tea) if you are wanting to use something that is an antiseptic (kills bacteria). You can give him some Benadryl, as the swelling could be due to an allergic reaction from the bush. See the attached article for dosing information. If he is pawing at his face, put an E-collar (cone of shame) own him so he doesn't scratch his skin or eyes. If your dog does not have diarrhea anymore you can put some baby cream or aloe vera cream on the affected area. If your dog still has diarrhea, stop feeding it for about 12 hrs then feed bland food (rice , broth, chicken) and if the diarrhea does not resolve within 2-3 days take her to your vet.

Honestly, it could be either from these photographs. If she's not scratching or dragging her bottom and the puffiness is the only symptom at this time, I would keep an eye on it. If it doesn't improve or resolve in a couple of days, I recommend getting her seen by your vet for an exam.

I would give him a cool water bath with a hypoallergenic shampoo to soothe the skin. He should be in a cone if he’s licking the area. It is most likely from the shaving. You can give Benadryl to calm the itching. There is a section on this website with dosages and facts about common over the counter medications you can give your dog. The cortisone cream may help calm the skin too. This may take several days for the irritation to improve. If he makes sores please take him in for an exam and medication to control the itching. Thos could be a tumor or severe infection. Place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent licking or chewing and have him seen by your veterinarian. Of he is painful or restless, consider a visit to the nearest veterinary ER. The veterinarian may perform a fine needle aspirate to collect samples for pathology if it is a mass. At the very least, medication can be given to calm Dopey or relieve pain if indicated. There is nothing OTC that can safely be given. Many OTC medications can be toxic to dogs or are easily overdosed.
