My dog’s anus is slightly puffy and red. Allergic reaction or anal gland issue?

Honestly, it could be either from these photographs. If she's not scratching or dragging her bottom and the puffiness is the only symptom at this time, I would keep an eye on it. If it doesn't improve or resolve in a couple of days, I recommend getting her seen by your vet for an exam.

Dogs can itch itch around their anus for several reasons including allergies as well as anal gland issues. Sometimes dogs anal glands can get impacted and then infected and abscess. This can be very painful and requires medical attention. Arnie will need to be examined by a vet to determine exactly what is going on and to get some relief. Hope he feels better soon.

Yes, it does sound like she is uncomfortable. Impacted anal glands, constipation, itchy skin allergies or even some intestinal worms can cause such symptoms. I would recommend a check of her anal glands by your vet or tech and further investigations if this does not resolve her condition

My dog keeps scooting and is red. Is it anal glands or allergies?

It appears from the pictures that hollys rectum is very red! It is possible she is having a recurring anal gland infection and needs oral antibiotics. Also she could be having allergies from the environment or fleas making her itchy. I recommend applying flea prevention and taking her back to a veterinarian. It might be time for a second opinion from a different veterinarian to be a little more aggressive with treatment plan.

My dog's bottom is swollen and warm. Should I see a vet now?

Swelling near the anus are usually secondary to a problem with the anal sac, such as an impaction, abscess or even cancer. It could also be secondary to something entirely different, such as an insect bite or a cyst. The vast majority of the time, these are not emergencies. So as long as Gidget is otherwise acting normally, you can call your veterinarian in the morning. A good physical exam will likely lead to a preliminary diagnosis and possible treatment. Why is my dog's anus red, swollen, and constantly being licked?

Red’s anus does look irritated and I can see some redness on the underside of his tail as well. He might be licking due to irritation from full anal glands, parasites or allergies. I would recommend having your vet examine him and check his anal glands. They may want to check a stool sample as well. Oral or topical medications might help. I would recommend putting an e-collar on to prevent licking until you can get to the vet.

This sounds like her anal sacs are fully and causing the scooting and itching. Even if they look normal on the outside they can be full inside. I recommend your veterinarian express the fluid in the anal sacs and they can see if they are over full or infected. The scooting can cause skin irritation. You can apply a thin coat of Vaseline to soothe the red skin. Yes allergies can cause itching but I would check the anal glands to make sure they are not the problem. Also make sure you are using warm water or something mild to clean the area after pooping. Some chemicals, soaps, and fragrances could cause a skin irritation and itching. My dog's anus is red, swollen, and wet after grooming. Is it serious?

Hi there and thanks for posting. Certain shampoos or sprays may irritate the skin and anus especially if she has a history of sensitive skin. Sometimes the groomers will express the anal glands as part of their grooming routine. If that was the case, sometimes there can be a small amount of inflammation afterwards especially if the anal sacs were very full. She may also have a skin infection or infection of the anal sacs as well which may be unrelated to the grooming. Why is my dog scooting with a red, swollen anus after diarrhea?

Either is possible - diarrhea can cause irritation and 'itchiness' of the anus and perianal area. Baxter's anal glands could also be full since they are normally emptied during defecation and his stool probably hasn't been bulky enough to express them. If his anal area looks irritated you could apply a thin layer of Vitamin A+D ointment or Petroleum jelly to the area, but if he keeps scooting I'd recommend taking him in to have his glands checked.
