My dog has a swollen bump on his back leaking pus. What should I do?

It could be an infection, cyst, or possibly a hystiocytoma. The best thing would be to have a vet take a look at the lesion. Your vet can do a needle aspirate to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat. He may need an antibiotic, anti-inflammatory, or it may need to be removed. Hope he feels better soon!

This presentation is due to a diffuse and quite severe pyoderma. A medicated shampoo, systemic antibiotics and a check up are absolutely needed to solve the problem. Pyoderma could be secondary to other diseases which cause immunosuppression. The bump you are seeing could be a mass, or it could be a skin lesion caused by bacterial, parasitic or fungal infection, dietary or environmental allergies or sensitivities, or could be a combination of the above. I recommend making an appointment to have your dog seen by your veterinarian to help determine the cause of the bump you’ve noticed and to make sure it is treated appropriately. The vet will likely want to look at a sample from the area under the microscope to determine what is causing the bump and to provide treatment. . In the meantime, if he is licking the area, I recommend putting an e-collar/cone on him to help prevent licking and reduce the risk of infection.

If there is pus coming out of it, I would be inclined to think that this bump on Bear is an abscess. It would cause him pain, and also cause him to be lethargy. I would take him into a vet either now or first thing in the morning to have this bump examined. If it is an abscess, it will need to be drained and flushed sterilely, and he will need antibiotics to treat the infection.

It sounds like he has a skin infection that needs to be treated again. Maybe he needed to stay on the antibiotics longer, either topical or oral. The bump could be related to the infection, a cyst, or a mass. It may respond to an antibiotic or your vet may need to biopsy or remove it to determine the exact cause. If you are noticing an odor, it's might be infected. This bump could be an infected cyst, a foreign body trapped under the skin or a ruptured tumor. I recommend to protect the area from any licking (Nala may need to wear an elizabethan collar at all times) and have her examined by the veterinarian within the next 24 hours. I hope this helps.

It is common for them to fill and burst. I recommend showing it to your vet at your next visit. They will stick a needle in it and look at the cells under the microscope to determine.
