My dog has pus-filled bumps all over his back. Is it serious?

To me is sounds like Broodie may have a skin infection known as bacterial dermatitis. This can be caused secondarily by allergies, mite infestations, flea problems, and food allergies. It would be best to take Broodie to your veterinarian so that she can be examined and if necessary, treatments like antibiotics can be started. This appears to be a pustule (pus-filled bump), which indicates that Sebastian has a pyoderma (bacterial skin infection). You can help remove these and keep them from coming back by cleaning the area with a medicated shampoo (can find this at the pet store) daily. Clean the area for at-least ten minutes at a time using warm water and a cloth. Wipe the skin gently, but do not scrub. Don't be surprised if some of these lesions pop - this is perfectly fine. Continue the daily cleaning until you don't see these bumps anymore. If it's not getting better within two weeks, then it's best to take Sebastian to the vet. Treatment may be topical, systemic or a combination. Consider adding an essential fatty acid supplement, such as DermCaps or EicosaCaps, to her diet to promote healthy skin and coat. Place an e-collar (cone) on your dog if she is licking or chewing excessively.

If Isaac has not been on a course of antibiotics I would get him on a 3-4 week course of an antibiotic like cephalexin or cefpidoxime. Addutional to oral antibiotics, i would recommend the following: 1. Douxo PS chlorhexidine combination shampoo and bathe twice weekly until the infection is resolved 2. Welactin omega 3 fish oil 3. Essential 6 spot on by dermoscent If there is no improvement, I would recommend further testing such as culturing the material in the pustules and a skin biopsy. A visit to a veterinary dermatologist should be considered if your vet is unable to make a diagnosis as a second opinion from a specialist is always helpful in these puzzling dermatological cases. It may be infected and he might need an antibiotic. The best thing would be to have your vet look at it again and prescribe an antibiotic. It could also just be removed so it doesn't swell and bother him again.

It sounds like Sequoia's condition may be more mild and respond to gentle cleansing, however I would recommend consulting with your veterinarian so that they can decide if Sequoia needs a course of antibiotics to help these lesions resolve. With his age I would be concerned about puppy pyoderma (bacterial skin infection common in young dogs) but a type of mange and secondary bacterial infection is also possible. If this is mange then his skin won't clear without treating both diseases. There is also a possibility of ringworm. Your veterinarian could do an exam and go over in detail the tests for those diseases and treatment options. Alternatively some try an OTC pet medicated shampoo but if the skin doesn't clear up then a visit to the veterinarian is needed.
