My dog has swollen anal glands. What can I do to help the swelling?

Poor smith. I would recommend taking him to a veterinarian to have the glands examined. A warm compress is a great idea but if they are infected smith will need antibiotics to help the swelling resolve. If infected anal glands are not addressed they can ruptured. Also sometimes based on the age of smith. Inflamed gland could be secondary to a mass, recital or prostate issue hope that helps

Thank you for using PetCoach. So sorry that Oscar had this issue. You can put Neosporin on it if you would like. Typically after lancing, anal glands heal up very quickly and easily. The Neosporin will not hurt anything though so it is fine to use. If you do use it, I would get the "plus" version that contains pramoxine which is a topical pain reliever. Warm packing is not necessary, but again, you can sure do that for 5 minutes twice a day for the first few days. It may make him feel a bit better. I don't personally think Glandex works that well. Canned pumpkin is fine to do and for a small dog 1/8 to 1/4 cup once or twice a day is sufficient. Hope this helps! Anal gland fistulas are usually very painful. I would recommend going back and asking for several days worth of pain medication (do NOT give human ibuprofen or acetominophen as those can be deadly to dogs), and an Elizabethan collar if you don’t already have one one to prevent licking. Feeding just boiled rice and chicken for 2-3 days is an option (unless Mojo has a chicken allergy) to feed a low residue diet that will be less painful to poop out. Good luck!

This can be painful and messy so I recommend using a hot compress on the area several times a day to keep it clean and draining. Then I apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment on the surface. As Milo will lick the area using a cone or restraint collar to prevent licking will help it heal faster. Once the sac has ruptured it usually will heal quickly on its own. Continue the antibiotics until they are finished. To prevent this from happening again I would have Milo's anal sacs expressed regularly, every two to three months. Hello. Yes, you can use this, or a little hydrocortisone cream, but I do not think it will really solve this problem. If he is straining due to hard stool, you can try adding a 1/2 teaspoon of Metamucil (psyllium), or a tsp. of canned pumpkin twice a day to his food to soften his stool. If his BMs are fairly normal & he is physically having problems passing stool, then this might be an arthritis issue. The best thing to do is to see your veterinarian to make sure there is not some other problem with the area, such as an anal gland infection, or even possible cancer. Hello, so sorry that Sydney is having this issue. It can take up to a week. If after that you are not seeing an improvement by then she will need to go back to the vet for a check-up. I am suspicious that Quora may have an anal sac abscess. These situations usually need antibiotics to resolve.
